This is just plain bad news! Tribune Chronicle
U.S. Rep. Timothy Ryan announced Friday that he has lost his seat on the House Appropriations Committee after four years.
Ryan, D-Niles, said in a news release the loss of his seat was the result of Democratic losses in the November election combined with Republican House Speaker John Boehner's decision to reduce the number of members serving on congressional committees.
"I'm very proud of my work as a member of the Appropriations Committee and proud to have awarded critical funding for very important investments that have revitalized our local economy, paved the way for groundbreaking research, and fundamentally changed the image of our community as a great place to create wealth," Ryan said.
He said he is confident he will return to the Appropriations Committee in the future, but in the meantime, he plans to continue being very aggressive in building on the area's economic development successes of the past few years.
Ryan was one of 10 Democrats appointed to the influential panel in December 2006 by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a fellow Democrat. He was named just before starting his third congressional term.
Among the local projects helped by Ryan's seat were the $1 million expansion of the National Packard Museum in Warren, a $1.5 million upgrade at Packard Music Hall in Warren, $2 million to renovate the former Ravenna Arsenal into an Ohio National Guard training facility and $2 million for the establishment of the Tech Belt Energy Innovation Center, Warren's green energy incubator.
The Appropriations Committee oversees about $873 billion in federal spending.
Last year, Ryan was named to the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, which oversees nearly $630 billion in military-related spending.
New assignments for the 112th Congress have not been determined at this time.
