Shooting a politician at a political event means it was politically motivated
It wasn't random. The guy chose this event and knew who he was shooting. He was clearly mentally disturbed, but most lone assassins are.

ability to think rationally...brain injury survivors can have very limited lives...and it's sad...had a friend whose husband had one...lingered 4 years in nursing home, died finally of an infection (due to his having to be prostrate for so much time each day)...they kind of "let him go"...that must have been a horrible experience...cannot imagine...

It appears as if a politician was targeted if you go by the fact that she was shot at point blank range. Sometimes (hell, truth be told, most of the time) the MSM, even MSNBC are such fucking dolts.

33. He's also apparently a delusional psychotic.
Who to judge from some of the insane and paranoid ramblings posted on his Youtube channel and his Myspace page etc would have likely shot a Republican as soon as a Democrat (since he seems to have had some generally bizarre broadly anti-government beliefs not directed against a particular party). Saying 'not politically motivated' is probably not true on the sketchy evidence that's available so far, and it's too early to really know; but it also doesn't necessarily appear that he was motivated by right-wing extremism as much as by psychosis (but again, it's still too early to really know).

42. He had an obsession with a movie about a political assassination

Hinckley believed that by acting out the movie Taxi Driver, he would impress an actress in some way.

Loughlin's Youtube rantings indicate that he has mental instabilities which involve a constellation of political ideas. Some of these political ideas resonate with teabaggery.

I would guess there will be quite a bit of conspiralunacy in the bag as well.

43. Depends on how deep you want to go.
There is a story about the Bush family, about Reagan stealing the presidency from Bush and about Neil Bush having dinner with Hinckley's brother a couple days before the shooting. http://www.hereinreality.com/hinckley.html

But that's all just a conspiracy theory. Just like Beck, Palin and Limbaugh have nothing to do with this shooting aside from their thinly veiled rhetoric on "taking back the country".

Edited on Sat Jan-08-11 07:19 PM by Edweird
I'm not absolving any of the RW'ers of their rhetoric. Loughner is alive and in custody so there will be plenty of time to get all the details. Given the circumstances I find it unlikely that it was not politically motivated, but it's still possible that he was just crazy.

If this is 'civil war', we have plenty of time to ramp up and get the war machine into high gear. The teabagger massacre can wait till tomorrow.

I don't remember which reporter it was but he came to the conclusion that since there were no direct threats to anyone in office on his postings, then it wasn't politically motivated.
