I just did a little googling, and one of the first items to come up was this thread from 2005:

It discusses "the FBI's curiously unthorough investigation" of the Niger forgeries, with side references to the anthrax attacks and Robert Mueller's past history as the chief Bush-appointed cover-up guy when BCCI blew.

It's not that the FBI doesn't do good work in areas where there's nothing to cover up. But the moment politics is involved, we have every reason to be skeptical.
