Norway PM: After attacks; more openness, more freedoms, and closer ties to immigrants
Five days after an attacker incensed by Norway's culture of tolerance horrified the world, Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday issued a quiet call of defiance to his countrymen: Make Norway even more open and accepting.

"The Norwegian response to violence is more democracy, more openness and greater political participation," Stoltenberg insisted at a news conference.

His promise in the face of twin attacks that killed 76 people signaled a contrast to the U.S. response after the 9/11 attacks, when Washington gave more leeway to perform wiretaps and to search records.

It reflects the difference between the two countries' approaches to terrorism: The U.S. has been frustrated by what it considers Scandinavia's lack of aggressive investigation and arrests.

1. I wonder what it would be like to live in a country where the government is sane?

3. I bow to the Norwegian people and their prime minister.
Truly they are beacons of sanity in a world that is rapidly going off the tracks.

4. What choice did they have? Crackdown on blond Christians?
They were in a corner with no easy scapegoats that were "different from us".

I seriously doubt that people of ANY nationality are THAT evolved. They just had no viable alternatives.

5. They could have done like we did after 9/11.
Enact a "Patriot Act" that curtails civil liberties. Allow warrantless wiretaps of just about anybody. Intrusive searches at airports. Encourage media personalities who preach hate 24/7. Political leaders go on teevee, wave the flag and proclaim that they'll "get" terrorists, dead or alive.

They didn't do those things. They made a choice to behave like a civilized society, not a pack of frightened, blustering fools.

6. The difference between the paranoid and the Liberal.
I don't see much difference between our Right wing and Anders Behring Breivik.
Really stop and think about it. Long term planing. Indecent Shooting people. Lots of people dead. Blowing up shit.
