Weather Today – January 10th 2031

This is Andrea Campbell here on the Weather Channel with today’s top stories, and boy do we have a lot to talk about today in each region of the country.

Let’s start in the Northeast – Yesterday’s blizzard that hit the Northeast adds to the total of snowfall on the ground in New York City. In areas that haven’t been plowed such as Central Park, an estimated 14 feet of snow stands completely burying everything except trees and light posts. It all started with the surprise blizzard of August 26th which brought two feet of snowfall. Since that storm daytime highs have not went above 32 degrees allowing the snow from each subsequent storm to pile up. Convoys of city trucks dump the snow from street removal into the Atlantic 24/7.

Onto the Southeast, South Florida recorded its first ever subzero low temperature this morning. A low of -4*F was observed at Miami International. Overall, during the most recent cold snap, Miami International has recorded lows below 10*F for the past 3 nights. The beaches of South Florida have been empty since early November due to uncomfortably cold temperatures.

Now, let’s head to the Midwest where there are many airport closures, but it’s not due to frozen precipitation, it’s extreme arctic cold which is causing mechanical failures in planes and also the vehicles that service them. Lows last night were -64*F at Minneapolis St. Paul International, -55*F at Chicago’s O’Hare, -47*F at Lambert St. Louis International, and -46*F also at Kansas City International. These airports will likely stay closed until temps can “warm” up at least into the -30’s overnight.

The next region with big weather news is the West Coast. The Pacific storm that struck Southern California left LA with a foot of snow, and San Diego with 18 inches. In LA, trying to clear the 405 of snowfall was a challenge after a 35-car pileup from the freezing rain that preceded the snowstorm. The snow will be sticking around for a while in Southern California with daytime highs this week only expected to be in the 10’s in LA and San Diego.

I'd have to google, but IIRC, the melting of the polar ice cap decreases the albedo of the earth's polar region, resulting in more warming of the atmosphere in the Arctic.

"Warming" in this case is a relative term - it's still Arctic air, which is very cold compared to temperate air, but the increase in temperature creates more high-pressure systems that push Arctic air down to temperate regions, where we are, and result in more blizzards.
