But as I said, Paul Krugman is a political rookie compared to Barack Obama. He is either unwilling or unable to actually look at the deal that was announced and realize what just happened: Barack Obama ate John Boehner's lunch, and then he turned Boehner out to go preach to his conservative colleagues that this eating of the lunch by Obama is actually politically good for them.

I am not kidding. Nor exaggerating. I will show you exactly how that happened if you bear with me a little bit. But first, let's get some details of the deal out of the way so that everyone has an idea what we're talking about.

snip

I hope this person is right. It makes me have a little be hope.

7. Everything political is subjective......
...just because you and a lot of others don't agree with it, doesn't mean that a lot do agree with it. No one here is a political genius. Personally, I believe Obama is smarter than anyone here, politically, and I trust what he does as being the best he could get given the current political climate. My views are mirrored by a lot of others here, but that is just our perspective. I didn't support Obama in the primaries but I like what we got. I believe he was the best available choice for our party.

4. ummm. hmmm...
Krugman is a Nobel Prize winning economist and a pragmatist--meaning he calls 'em as he sees 'em. If that makes him a political "rookie," (and that is somehow a really 'bad' thing), then I think we've stooped to a level of cynicism that is beyond nauseating.

5. The republicans have said they will not allow any republican on the commission that agrees to tax
increases. I also suspect they will be looking for people who will go after "entitlements"

What happens when this "commission" cannot agree? Automatic cuts will kick in, and Medicare will be affected, and people will be hurt

9. I was assuming that the Democrats would appoint someone to protect the peoples interest, however if
they did as you suggest, then we will get the short end of the stick with that scenario also. I cannot see any good coming from the perspective of those most in need

19. My guess: Baucus, Landrieu, Warner, Nelson, Conrad, Feinstein or similar.
No one in real power is protecting the interests of the people.

12.  if I am reading it right
What happens when this "commission" cannot agree? Automatic cuts will kick in, and Medicare will be affected, and people

Medicaid, low income assistance programs and medicare benefits are exempt the cuts would go to the providers. Doctors, hospitals, medical device makers, drug manufacturers ect.... not great but it does help that a lot of the folks it will effect are heavy repub contributors. So this trigger does have a a bit of power to upset the tea kettle.

I am inclined to believe the truth of this deal is somewhere in middle of all yelling from both sides. ehh it does make for great ratings among the dueling entertainment shows we like to call news.

6. Paul Krugman has been an economist for decades.
President Obama is far more of a "rookie" than Krugman. Krugman understands fully what this shitty, unnecessary "deal" will do to our economy over time.

That this piece is poorly written doesn't help drive its point home either.
