The outcry over this incident, to me, is not about the incident per se on some much deeper level.

I've finally gotten around to understanding my response to this incident. Yes, this person was unbalanced. No, he is not the exemplar of any particular ideology. Yet, his actions have created a legitimate outcry.

The outcry is the outcome of two years of racist hate-mongering eliminationist bombast from Republican politicians and media figures that created a climate of such incivility, such racism, that people FEARED this would happen - because, face it, THE RIGHT WING WAS CALLING FOR THIS TO HAPPEN.

That's what "settle this with bullets if not ballots" and "second amendment solutions" is all about. Those words aren't about political rhetoric. Those words are threats against the govt of the United States.

That's what teabagger signs reading, "we didn't come armed...this time" were and are all about.

These were THREATS against the govt of the United States that were allowed to continue with impunity - that were SPONSORED by Fox News, that were APPLAUDED by Republicans IN OFFICE. That were PAID FOR by the Koch Bros and Dick Armey and other Republican pacs.

The outcry is about the staggering number of HATE CRIMES attempted, because of HCR, against sitting members of Congress. - this shooting was the feared outcome of this HORRIFIC use of RACISM, FEAR and LIES.

People didn't fear a crazy person that you couldn't predict would do this. People feared a so-called "Palin Republican" or "Ditto-head" or "Beck Baby" would think that such action was permissible BECAUSE REPUBLICAN POLITICIANS AND MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES TOLD THEM IT WAS OKAY.

we are not God, so we need an honest counter-point to interact with in order to discover reality.

It's not about a counter-ideology; it's about the lies and manipulation and violence that they justify with their divine assumptions.

I'm not taking the hate speech lightly anymore. I'll raise a stink every time I hear it - not just after someone dies from it. Public shame and outcry is the only way to stop this - and it could save other lives.

I've already noted on this board that the simple and most effective way to send a message is to cancel your cable and tell your cable provider you are doing so because of Fox News.

This requires a "sacrifice" on the part of people - but, you know, it seems that people have made bigger sacrifices for extremely important reasons.

If they can't make money by spreading the hate, they'll stop.

Dean rallies his democratic base with the equivalent of a football hurrah and the mainstream media can't stop denigrating him.

The sheriff of Pima Co. notes Limbaugh's calls to murder people and the mainstream media tells the SHERIFF to shut up.

Candy Crowley says the SHERIFF wasn't in his right mind - but calls to murder by people paid by Fox News/The Republican Party - that's "reasonable."

but I would add that it is also great sadness and anger towards those that fight against any real progress to help make the people of the United States healthy and our environment safe...

The same people that are, by their silence, condoning the hate and violence, are fighting against medical help for mentally ill people and they are fighting against providing people with livable wage jobs and good housing and all the other protections that our tax dollars should go towards...

If the Democrats could get many of the programs passed, people like the shooter may be able to get help, much anger would dissipate because people wouldn't be losing jobs and security...

The outcry is a result of fine people losing their lives and some being wounded in Tuscan... senseless because so much could be done to help stop these kinds of outbursts... only the Republicans keep getting in the way of true social progress
