BREAKING News: Apparent Earthquake Strikes Part Of New York City

The magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck at 1:51 p.m. EDT in central Virginia, about 83 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., the U.S. Geological Survey said in a bulletin Tuesday. The quake hit at a depth of 0.6 miles.
But the tremors could definitely be felt around New York, with reports coming into WSJ’s headquarters of lamps shaking and other furniture moving for about 10 seconds. At my desk in Midtown, to offer just one obviously anecdotal example, the computer monitors bounced up and down in an unusual way.

According to Weather Journal’s Eric Holthaus, the earthquake was the largest earthquake ever to be recorded in the D.C. area. He writes:
