Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox will use his state experience in health care regulation when he begins his new job Monday with the Dykema law firm.
Cox, 49, of Livonia, will be senior counsel in the firm's litigation department, where he will focus on health care fraud compliance and white-collar defense issues, Dykema announced Tuesday. Cox will be based in the firm's Detroit office.
Cox said Tuesday that health care became a bigger issue than he imagined in his two terms as attorney general.
"I've been in the right place at the right time to learn a lot about health care," said Cox, who has worked in the prosecutor offices in Oakland and Wayne counties. "I think that will put me in a great position for health care providers."
Cox will help clients such as hospitals deal with increased compliance and anti-fraud policies arising from the federal Affordable Care Act of 2010 and False Claims Act violations. As attorney general, Cox joined other states in a lawsuit trying to overturn federal health care reform, an issue that is proceeding through the federal court system.
Cox, a 2010 hopeful for governor who lost in the Republican primary, will handle issues related to a federal law prohibiting a doctor from having a financial relationship with a referral agency.
