much bad about Luke Russert, I'm sure I missed something along the way.

they don't necessarily think the same. IMO that's what the poster was getting at.

5. Defend him on what?
A good question to ask would be why do people dislike him?
He has a BA in Communications and he is just doing his job for NBC/MSNBC, he started out reporting on youth issues during the 2008 campaign and has worked his way up a bit.

Luke had one of the best teachers regarding politics and the media - his Dad :)

12. I didn't know he did that during the campaign. I'm glad he
got the opportunity.

I don't see where someone like Chuck Todd is ALL that much better, and Luke is coming along, IMO.

I hate to invoke Godwin's Law, but that's kind of like saying that Goebels wasn't all that much better than Hitler.

17. so when he got this job, he was just as good as everyone else when they started?
are you willing to say that?

as good as Rachel Maddow when she was hired by MSNBC.

as good as other reporters whose first gig was on MSNBC?

32. Easily as good as Maddow.
Then again, like most people, I don't watch the evening cable shills for either side on either of the party's dedicated networks. Maybe Rachel has gotten better.

Does she still stutter and giggle while reading the prompter?

Edited on Thu Sep-01-11 08:33 PM by sabrina 1
not impressed with him as a journalist, after a while I could not even watch him as he let the war criminals lie blatantly each time he had them on his show. I don't know if that was because he secretly supported them, or he was afraid of them. Either way, at a time when they badly needed to be challenged on the lies they were telling, he did not do that. I would not want him teaching the next generation of journalists for that reason.

29. He was like that because he wanted to get ahead.
Jack Welch knew he had a lacky in Russert and Russert was more than happy to play the role. He learned the ropes quickly and had no problem abandoning all journalistic integrity to rake in the bucks. In a lot of ways he ushered in the end of serious journalism.

7. I don't defend him, I just don't dump on him
because he got his job the way many in the TV and film industry do ... being related to someone. It's not fair but it's not unusual. I'm not going to get myself all worked up about someone I pretty much tune out anyway.

we are urged not to punish children for what their parents may have done.

I guess that only applies in that situation.

11. I think he's improved a lot since he was tossed into the soup.
He seems to have a growing understanding of how things work, and also I've felt he's shown some ability to analyze.

I don't think it was easy for him to take on that job, especially knowing what people would be saying about him.

I don't think he's any worse than any other fresh-skinned plebe on their first major job, and I give him props for handling it well, working hard, and being able to (for the most part) be objective.

:hi:

I also defend Tweety, too. :7

16. One of the many reasons I avoid MSNBC
His Dad was a Republican shill and Luke is a shameless nepotist. He's not as bad as Uncle Pat, the racist patriarch of that shop, but he's young still, and has much time to catch up.

why shouldn't he be given a shot at carrying on his father's work?

23. His father's work airc, was promoting War Criminals
on his show every week. That is all I know of Tim Russert. I kept waiting for him to challenge Condi and Cheney when they would lie to the American people on his show, but he never did. Making it impossible to watch him after a while. If his son follows in his footsteps then I would feel the same way about him.

We need real journalists, not enablers for the PTBs, which most of our 'journalists' are these days anyhow.

24. Most junior reporters put some time in in the trenches and boonies, earning their first stripes.
Luke went from classroom to network prominence. While I wouldn't mind so much his reading copy to me at a news desk, it bugs me to have him being presented as a reporter. There's a big difference.

33. Luke would have had a more minor role, if his dad hadn't of died during the campaign.
Edited on Thu Sep-01-11 10:03 PM by immoderate
I think the timing and circumstances pushed him into the spotlight. Otherwise, he might have had a few yers to get some seasoning in the minors.

Luke is not Tim. He's a blank, an ingot to be stamped. We don't know what he is yet. Ron Reagan is not like his father. Chris Wallace?

I have not seen him do anything more offensive than any of the other "objective" daytime types. He's not as good looking as Tamron Hall.
