From Unemployed To Unemployable

http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2011/09/01/140122883/when-the-unemployed-become-effectively-unemployable

The unemployment rate didn't budge in August, according to this morning's jobs report. Net job growth was zero.

Also basically unchanged: The number of people who have been out of work and looking for a job for six months or more.

More than 6 million Americans are now among the long-term unemployed, up from about 1 million before the recession. The long-term unemployment rate is far higher than it's been at any time since before War II.

That's very bad news not just for the unemployed, but for the long-term health of the U.S. economy.

4. My husband hit 99 weeks.
The unemployment rate in my area is 16%. There are NO jobs. None. Zero. Zip. Nada. And a college education actually HURTS you in most cases. It's horrible out here. The worst I've ever seen it.

5. It's likely the unemployement rate will be readjusted with October's report
as the job losses created by Irene haven't been factored in. Add the potential of Lee (in the Gulf) and while Katia's path may veer away from the east cost, there could be more damage, which isn't good for business/employment. Not good news...

From BLS:

Seasonal adjustment

Over the course of a year, the size of the nation's labor force and the
levels of employment and unemployment undergo sharp fluctuations due to
such seasonal events as changes in weather, reduced or expanded production,
harvests, major holidays, and the opening and closing of schools. The ef-
fect of such seasonal variation can be very large; seasonal fluctua-
tions may account for as much as 95 percent of the month-to-month changes
in unemployment

6. Unemployed but I voluntarily QUIT
because I want to move out of state. Would they consider that a strike against me too? Extremely difficult to commute to a job 1,000 miles away. I would think the state where I was born, raised, and spent over half a century would be flattered that I would quit a job in another state to go back to my hometown. BTW, the unemployment rate is lower in my BLUE homestate.

8. There were 93,000 new jobs added in August, just not enough to bump the unemployment.

Businesses Add 93,000 New Jobs in August – Not Enough to Impact Unemployment

Many businesses across the US are known to have largely shrugged off the fears of a new recession and kept on hiring throughout August – though sadly not at nearly a high enough rate to lower the huge unemployment figures.

According to key analysts, the American economy added up to 93,000 new jobs last month, which is a marked drop from the 117,000 of July. As such, the unemployment rate looks set to hold steady at 9.1% when the government’s report is released later today.
