‘A rising tide lifts all boats.’
Edited on Fri Sep-02-11 03:33 PM by Octafish
Conservatives have used President John F. Kennedy’s quote
in support of a tax cut in 1963 – when the top rate was 91-percent –
to somehow suggest that JFK today would be a Republican.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

JFK then was a Democrat, through and through. And he would be today. Period.

From his belief in public service, just because it’s the right thing to do, to his work for peace, no matter the personal or political cost, he worked to make this a better country for ALL Americans the entire time he was in public office.

Contrast with the current crop in Washington, who use their time or term in office to get ready for their one small step through the spinning turnstyle to the giant leap* of the big bucks in the private sector they helped deregulate and now are incorporated furiously to piratize entire nations through transnational banks and permanent war for profit.

Come on, Mr. Holder! Meet Mr. Geithner. Meet Mr. Cheney. And we wonder why the rich keep getting richer and why war trumps peace?

I’d like to tell you something else. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy wouldn’t stand for any of that crap. Despite the best efforts of the ultraconservative J Edgar Hoover, RFK was the first AG to take on the Mafia.

*Neil Armstrong, whose phrase I borrowed and corrupted, has never used his fame as the first man to walk on the moon for personal gain and aggrandizement. Unlike many on the lecture circuit, he used his talents and fame through government service to enlighten others as a university professor.

My dad complaining that the Mafia charged people some 150% for a loan.

He felt any organization calling itself a "family" should be able to knock their rates down by half that.

Now we have the extremely necessary Payday loan companies that help an individual forestall the 82,000% loan one incurs when one bounces a check for five bucks.

Your paycheck is going to be delayed for 48 hours, and if even one check doesn't clear the local bank, that is how much of a hit you will take. Even if the NSF amount is only five bucks, for thirty six hours!

So you hustle yourself down to the PayDay advance place, where you can get a loan, and that loan only costs you 900% a year.

12. The Mafia IS the Establishment

Howard Hughes's right hand man, the late Robert Maheu, is on the right in the photo above.
He also is remembered for helping CIA hire the Chicago mob to kill Castro in 1960.

2. It may have been true when the rate was 91%...
...but at 36%, it's a goddamn travesty.

A rising tide lifts all boats except those already sinking. It wouldn't have done squat for the Titanic.

8. republicans specialize in half-truths.
when they're not outright lying, of course.

if their idea of a tax cut is a rising tide, then at best it some kind of tide that lifts the little boats by a tiny amount and the yachts by an enormous amount. the love the "rising tide" metaphor because it makes it sound equal and fair as if all boats are lifted the same amount, when reality that's not remotely the case.

businesses are job creators? half-truth. growing businesses start off with a lot of hiring as the launch and expand, but the big companies that form their real base are all about "efficiency", which means mergers and layoffs and consolidation and offshoring.

and so on.

13. A Rising Tide Lifts All Yachts
A rising tide lifts all yachts. Outboard motored bass-boats and smaller craft stay stuck on the bottom even as the onrushing water pours over the gunnels.
