My mom said well.. there's only so much they allow one to receive out of Social Security, so taxing on the entire amount of one's earnings is not particularly fair... I said Mom what are you smoking? How fair is it to the woman who pays in her entire life, and then her husband dies, she forfeits her social security to collect her dead husband's because he made more than she did. Exactly how fair is it to her? How fair is it to the family that makes less and has to pay 100% of their earnings for a lifetime, yet someone more well off has a cap? How fair is it to the man who works his entire life and dies at 68 or 58... they will never take out what they put into the pot. The wealthy who wouldn't notice the bit extra every pay period that comes out of his/ her pay check needs some sort of extra perk of a tax break. They can afford it. They should want to hold up a system that has worked and is good for Americans. AND you never know, they may lose it all and need the social security. They will definitely benefit from Grandma being able to continue to contribute as a consumer in her old age. It is that Dr or business man who will benefit from Grandma and Govt helping to pay the bill.

Once I said it like this, her entire thought process fell flat. (She is a moderate Democrat--Independent type, Vermonter). Anyway, its the very first political argument that I actually got her head to think differently about. She was like, yeah, you are right.. the people who die to early to receive benefits forfeit the pay out. The woman or man whose spouse dies and takes the other spouse's social security pay because it is higher, forfeits...So the wealthier who can afford a bit more, who probably have a better retirement plan anyway, should just pay 100% like the rest of us poorer people.

between about $50-$107K is subsidizing the system for everyone. Thank goodness for two earner incomes at $107K they are carrying the most weight. A simple understanding in our country as to how S.S. retirment benefits are calculated would go a long way in the debate. The formula should be discussed in every Algebra I class in the country and reinforced in a mandatory Economics class. This is real math which impacts an individual more than almost any other thing in our country.

If you go on the S.S. website, you have to click around to get the formula which I think is a problem.
Remember 90%, 32%, and 15%. Given the small impact of the 15% why should we not expect those making over $107K to step up to help as well. I would even agree to lower the percentage withheld over $107K. Ask the question - does your obligation to poorer Americans end after you and your employer contribute a certain amount of your income.

reason. However, if he ran for President as a third party candidate, he'd get less than one percent of the popular vote and would win zero electoral votes.
