Let's cut right to the chase. Simply put, the program for job creation that President presents to the Congress and the American people on September 8th, will be his last and final chance to prove that he is capable of leading this nation. Should he once again fail to show leadership, courage and conviction in addressing this issue, his presidency will, in effect, be over and he will become totally irrelevant.

Let's put aside all this nonsense between the White House and John Boehner relative to when President Obama will present his speech on job creation to a joint session of Congress. Who cares when he gives it as long as he attacks this issue head on and tells the American people what they have long been waiting to hear. So on Thursday, September 8th, Mr. Obama, whether he knows it or not, will be making the most important speech of his life.

The last poll I saw indicated that two-thirds of the American people disapprove of his handling of the economy. That is simply astounding when we consider that many of the people polled had to have been liberals, progressives and independents; many of whom formerly supported him. It also is a clear indication that if he, once again, fails to address this country's #1 problem and presents some kind of lukewarm, watered down plan, then he can kiss his second term goodbye.

In anticipating this crucial presentation, I thought about how I would address this issue if I were the president of the United States. What would I do if I were faced with this monumental problem that is destroying this economy and causing great anguish in the lives of millions of Americans who desperately want to work but can't find a job? What kind of plan would I develop and how would I present it to the American people?

5. I think he would have been better off to tell Boner to F.O.

and just give the address from the Oval Office. Anyone would know WHY he's doing it from there, and that wouldn't hurt the message any. And he wouldn't have to worry about any "You Lie!" moments from certain unhousebroken teabaggers.

The sky is always falling, the end is always near, and these are the worst of times. And the most florid handwringers always seem to have the miraculous panacea to it all--just the words that should be uttered to magically cure the world's ills. Amazing how that works. It reminds me a lot of faith healers.

10. I'm not saying that the economy, unemployment, and housing ...

aren't in bad shape and that a lot of people have lost jobs. I have incredible empathy for that. The hyperbole to which I refer is the suggestion that it's all over if Obama doesn't do anything fast and that seventy-some percent of people won't even vote for him. As if the President alone can create jobs (especially with an obstructionist Congress that won't allow short-term spending), or as if even if he does come up with a decent program that this will alleviate all the problems immediately. It doesn't happen like that. Even with the New Deal, unemployment remained persistently high for nearly a decade. It didn't reach 15% (higher than now) until 1940. People still voted for Roosevelt. Four times. In the meantime, remember that Obama managed to get billions of dollars to the states over two years to keep public employees from being laid off, that he extended unemployment insurance massively, and that he has tried other stimulative measures that don't need Congress' approval (such as fast-tracking new infrastructure spending) whenever possible. Is it enough? No, but Matt Stoller's bleak picture of the political future is way over the top.
