GOP rivals should be Ronald Reagan strong

By FRANK CARLUCCI | 9/4/11 7:20 AM EDT

The top Republican contenders for president gather Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library for one of the most important traditions in our political discourse — the debate.

To be sure, the majority of the discussion will focus on how we can cut spending and regain our nation’s solid fiscal footing. As these candidates seek to follow in the footsteps of President Reagan, whom I served, they will need to make a compelling case for how they will continue to keep America as that shining city on a hill. Reagan led the United States as the last remaining superpower. And he used all of the tools available to him in our national security arsenal — ensuring a strong defense complemented by effective development and diplomacy operations.
