Typhoon dumps record rain on Japan, killing 25

TOKYO (AP) — Rescuers in Japan dug through mud-caked debris and searched the banks of swollen rivers Monday for those missing in a powerful typhoon that left at least 25 people dead, the latest disaster for a country still recovering from a calamitous tsunami six months ago.

Typhoon Talas, which was later downgraded to a tropical storm, lashed coastal areas with destructive winds and record-setting rains over the weekend. In addition to the dead and missing, thousands more were stranded as the typhoon washed out bridges, railways and roads.

"We will do everything we can to rescue people and search for the missing," said new Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, who took office just one day before the typhoon hit and whose government is still struggling to deal with the tsunami recovery and the ensuing nuclear crisis.

The typhoon was believed to be the worst to hit Japan since 2004, when 98 people were killed or reported missing. It caused most of its damage on the Kii Peninsula, in central Japan southwest of Tokyo and hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the country's tsunami-ravaged northeastern coast.<snip>

Talas kills 25, leaves 50 missing

Torrential rain brought by tropical storm Talas has triggered mudslides and floods across western Japan. Twenty-five people have been killed and 50 others remain missing. In Wakayama Prefecture, 15 people were killed. Police say 27 others are missing. In Tanabe city, a landslide destroyed 3 houses, killing one person and leaving 7 others missing. In Nachi-Katsuura town, a man was found dead in a submerged car and another in a damaged house. In neighboring Nara Prefecture, 4 people have been confirmed dead and 20 remain unaccounted for.

In Tokushima, 2 were killed and one is missing. In Mie, an 89-year-old woman was killed in a mudslide. An 87-year-old man was found dead in a submerged home.
A 45-year-old woman in Ehime was swept away in a river and drowned, while a 90-year-old man in Hiroshima was found dead after leaving home to move a vessel. One person each in Hyogo and Kagoshima prefectures are missing.

More than 100 cases of injuries were reported. The storm has destroyed nearly 80 houses. At least 13,500 homes were flooded. Nearly 30,000 households in 4 prefectures have been left without power.

in Himeji alone.

But on my island, we closed our sea gates, used the big pumps and managed to be okay with little flooding.

we were worried about mudslides and houses coming tumbling down onto ours, so we had the kids sleep on the first floor away from the mountain side, but we were lucky and nothing happened.
