The World According to Monsanto : U.S. researchers find Roundup chemical in water, air
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/31/us-glyphosate-pollution-idUSTRE77U61720110831

(Reuters) - Significant levels of the world's most-used herbicide have been detected in air and water samples from two U.S. farm states, government scientists said on Wednesday, in groundbreaking research on the active ingredient in Monsanto Co's Roundup.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"It is out there in significant levels. It is out there consistently," said Paul Capel, environmental chemist and head of the agricultural chemicals team at the U.S. Geological Survey Office, part of the U.S. Department of Interior. Capel said more tests were needed to determine how harmful the chemical, glyphosate, might be to people and animals.

The study comes on the heels of several others released recently that raise concerns about the rise of resistant "super weeds," and other unintended consequences of Roundup on soil and animals.

Capel said glyphosate, the key ingredient in "Roundup" herbicide, was found in every stream sample examined in Mississippi in a two-year period and in most air samples taken. Tests were also done in Iowa. "So people are exposed to it through inhalation," said Capel.

Most of the corn, soybeans and cotton grown in the United States are part of the Roundup Ready system.

3. and this will fall
on deaf ears. Monsanto has done such a thorough job of indoctrinating the public about the "safety" of roundup that it is hard to get people to believe it is not safe. This info needs to get out there nonetheless.
I was pretty much gassed when a neighbor sprayed forestry grade glyphosate all over his yard. When I talked with the man who did it - he said it was the same thing as roundup and that is safe.

4. I just need to doublecheck that I understand this...
It kills pretty much every plant on the Earth except the few that have been genetically modified to withstand it. It lasts for months in the most biologically active top layer of soil. It's found everywhere on the planet.

And this is supposed to be safe. Pardon me while I launch another squadron of pigs.

5. It was many years
before they actually tested the complete product. They only tested the glyphosate alone. When outside researchers finally tested the glyphosate and the "inert ingredients" they found it was much more toxic than Monsantao had said.
Since their patent has run out, now there are lots of other manufacturers using slightly different formulations.

I am hoping Environmental Working Group picks up on this.

8. Evil assholes
DDT, Agent Orange, GMO Seed, fucking roundup, this is the worst corporation on the planet as they may destroy the food supply over time.
Rodale was right and if you apply the common sense razor it is proven.

Organic method. Period

9. This nasty stuff is the real reason Monsanto is evil, not GMOs.
I've read that chronic Glyphosate exposure is associated with lower IQs and a higher incidence of ADHD.

So THAT'S what's the matter with Kansas.

10. The easiest way I can explain the hazards of round up on crops
is to tell them to go into the herbicide/ pesticide area of a store.. Pick up a bottle and read the section on ingesting the poison and what to do... Now, they dump this stuff on our food and send it to the grocery store for you to buy. So every item, unless organic, is covered with harmful chemicals that you are warned against ingesting if you buy a small bottle for your yard... And the stuff out their in the fields is probably stronger, the plants are engineered in a manner that they won't die when this crap is dumped on them.

Now, does it make sense paying the price you are for fruits and vegetables that are soaked in chemicals and biologically engineered? Don't you think over a lifetime of eating these items, you will be more susceptible to things like cancer?

Just a logical thought process like that usually gets them thinking in another manner regarding the food they are buying at an ever increasing cost. For the price, it ought to be good for you.

11. Hey, that's right
It's not that the plants reject the glysophate, it's just that they can still survive even after soaking in the stuff.

So it's inevitable that trace amounts are probably always present in our foods.

And never forget, scientists once thought Radium was harmless, too.
