Lincoln quote on Labor.
"Labor is prior to and independent of capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration." - Abraham Lincoln

I believe the gentleman understood how things work, as opposed to those in his party (and many Democrats) who came later.

2. Precisely
Although some of that "slowdown" may well be the self inflicted wound that Corporations have created by following the "more with less" mantra. By holding down wages, continuous "right sizing" and alike they have stripped away the ability of consumer to consume in a consumer based and driven society.

No Jobs = No Customers and No Spending on the products of the Corporations.
