I don't know if this is exclusive to Florida, but a friend passed on some information and I wondered if it was happening elsewhere.
First, the rate of divorce. We all knew this was going to happen, but the divorce rate is now 50%. However, with two people now living in two different homes, that's two houses now that are limited in paying taxes up to $25,000 under Homestead protection. That means less taxes.
Also, this person found a difference in the spelling of names at the property appraiser's office, and the actual deed. Lots of these kind of mistakes. The deed shows the right name, the property appraiser's office shows slight misspellings. Why this is a concern, if it's true, is that it means that groups of people are going in to buy deflated priced condominiums and are paying zero in taxes because of some save our homes initiative.
I don't know how cities are going to survive this way, especially where they get their money from residential taxes.
