Filipinos hunt 2nd killer croc after 1-ton catch

MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- After capturing a one-ton crocodile that could be one of the biggest caught alive in the world, officials said Tuesday that they were hunting for an even bigger beast that may be lurking in the creeks of a remote southern Philippine region.

Villagers and veteran hunters ensnared a 20-foot (6.1-meter) saltwater crocodile over the weekend after a three-week hunt along a creek in Bunawan township in remote Agusan del Sur province, where terrified villagers have reported at least one deadly attack by the huge reptiles.

The crocodile -- weighing 2,370 pounds (1,075 kilograms) -- was the biggest to be caught alive in the Philippines in recent years. Wildlife officials were trying to confirm whether it was the largest such catch in the world, said Theresa Mundita Lim of the government's Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau.

The Guinness World Records lists a saltwater crocodile caught in Australia as the largest crocodile in captivity, measuring 17 feet 11.75 inches (5.48 meters). Saltwater crocodiles can live for more than 100 years and grow to 23 feet (7 meters).

10. Well I thought frog legs tasted like chicken until I ate alligator -
and I realized that alligator tasted more like frog. It was then I realized that frog does not taste like chicken at all - thus alligator can not/ does not taste like chicken.

I think I will believe that alligator tastes like frog until someone feeds me something and says it tastes like frog and I realize that it actually tastes like alligator. And so it goes.

Bottom line - people need to stop pickin' on chickens.

17. The one time I had alligator was in the Florida Glades
at the Miccosukee Indian Reservation. And they served alligator tail. And I remember it tasted like a cross between chicken and veal.

14. It's a crocodile. That's what they do.
they do that all the time. So do lots of wild animals and reptiles. Doesnt' mean we need to capture/kill them.

16. If you are so okay with being eaten
Why not hop on over to the phillipines and throw yourself in front of the other monster crocodile they are hunting. You could then be a true hero, and save the life of the other person whom it would be eating at that time.

20. I don't choose to go near any area where wild animals are known to be
sorry, but that croc has every right to be where it is without being captured. I'm sorry about the person who died, but it doesn't mean that croc deserves to be captured or killed.

19. WTF?????
Yes, Yes, it does. Look, I love nature and animals as much as the next guy. I was raised in the Southeast and I don't hunt, if that tells you anything. But when an animal threatens people, it has to be put down or removed from the situation. I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect the village is dependent upon access to the river for its very survival. So, I doubt this is a case of humans straying deep into the brush and invading a creature's otherwise untouched habitat. These animals are hunting and eating humans along the banks of the river.

I suppose that, if a large python was wrapping itself around your child, you would say "Well, that's what pythons do". Give me a break. I would find no fault with those villagers killing that croc to protect themselves and their families, just as I hold no grudge against my ancestors for killing cave bears, smilodons, wolves and other predators of the era. Saving one's ass - and the asses of loved ones - trumps animal conservation every time.

22. Yeah...
...and when they do we kill them - that is what we, Homo Sapiens, do. If you want to be preditorial you shouldn't pick on a species that can kick your tail!

Because we, as homo sapiens, are a fearful, selfish species.
