"I told Newt he looks fat" (Alan Grayson)
Edited on Tue Sep-06-11 04:14 PM by Roland99
from email:

Newt, Lay Off the Fries....

One of the few “perks” of former Members of the House – pretty much the only one, actually -- is that we can go to the Floor of the House whenever the House is in session. Return to the scene of the crime, so to speak.

That’s always fun. I remember when Newt Gingrich did it a year ago.

By way of background, Newt Gingrich went on Fox News and called me “fundamentally dishonorable.” Twice. In case you didn’t hear him the first time.

Remember, it was Newt Gingrich who went to the hospital to demand a divorce from his cancer-stricken wife, so that Gingrich could marry the woman with whom he’d been having an affair. And it was Gingrich who condemned President Clinton for having an affair, at the same time that Gingrich was having another affair.

Newt may be “married,” but it’s not the way that you and I think of married. He has disavowed his vows. You almost need a scorecard to keep up with all the times he scores.

When Gingrich was asked to explain this behavior on TV last month, he could have said – should have said -- “because I’m fundamentally dishonorable.” But no, Gingrich said that it was because he loved America so much. Well, certain females in America, anyway.

So Gingrich came to the Floor of the House a year ago. I went nowhere near him. I just don’t like the smell of sulfur. But another member, whom I like very much, told me that she wanted to introduce me. I said, “no, that’s OK, thanks anyway. I really don’t know what to say to him.” But she insisted.

She introduced me to Newt.

I said to him, “you look like you’ve gained a lot of weight.”

Newt stared at me.

I said, “I remember you being much slimmer back in the 1990’s. When you were relevant.”

Newt scowled at me, and walked away. Good comeback, Newt. By the way, Newt Gingrich scowls just the way you would expect Newt Gingrich to scowl.

I would like to think that that light little love-tap on Newt Gingrich’s ego may have pushed him just a tiny bit toward running for President. Which is great. Because Newt is really going to be hammered. If it’s an eight-person field, Newt will finish ninth.

It’s the Giuliani Effect. The more you know Newt, the more you hate him.

In 1980, John Connally spent $11 million running for President, and won one delegate to the Republican Convention – Ada Mills, of Clarksville, Arkansas. I think that Newt is going top Connally.

But that’s enough about Newt. This note is actually about you. Yes, you.

Don’t look behind you; I’m talking to you.

Next week, I’m going to Washington, DC, and I will visit the Floor of the House. And since I will be seeing the high and mighty, I would like to know whether there is anything that you want me to tell them. If so, click here.

Courage,

Alan Grayson

12. A little crass in this case
But humorous in the way he writes. I guess he doesn't have much to argue on policy though, and resorts to snide comments and low blows and then brags about it. Not very becoming of a politician. Funny though.

This is an email sent to supporters. You think he should have thrown in a little "don't forget to tax the rich!" at the end?

35. Tell it to the Republicans, you know, like the VP who told
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 12:39 AM by sabrina 1
a Democratic Senator to 'go fuck yourself' on the floor of the House. Or to the Republican who called President Obama a 'liar' in the middle of the SOTU Address. Or to the Republicans who encouraged their surrogates, like Ann Coulter to make fun of a Democratic lawmaker who lost three limbs in Vietnam, and to call him a liar by claiming he was wounded in the US while drunk. I could go on, but the list is long.

They set the tone, if they don't like it, all they have to do is apologize for the depths to which they have brought the political discourse.

Grayson is honest. He was called dishonest by Newt Gingrich. That is far more 'crass' than what Grayson said to him. Odd that you found Grayson to be crass, but not Gingrich. I would rather be told I had gained weight, if I actually had, than be called 'dishonest' or 'dishonorable' on Television any day. And at least what Grayson said was the truth.

He was teaching him a lesson, I think in the only way some ignorant, ruthless bullies can learn a lesson, by giving then a taste of their own medicine. Now Newt knows it's probably better if he sticks to policies rather than libeling a US Representative, especially one who won't take it sitting down.

As for Grayson's policies, he knows more about Progressive Democratic Policies than half the people in Congress pretending to be Democrats. Shame you are not familiar with his positions on important issues.

42. So sorry he didn't spoon-feed you the entire history and convince you.
The fact that Gingrich was screwing someone else (other than his wife) while impeaching Clinton over a BJ should be enough, but I guess you need more "proof" of the hypocrisy that is his entire life.

Personally, I've had to share an elevator with him, and I felt dirty all day.

50. What do you mean?
There is honestly a lot of hypocritical double talk from newt as he runs for president. Resorting to fat jokes just seemed petty to the encounter but the whole letter is funny as shit. I only did a rhetorical retort to emphasize that. This stuff bit Graysen before and just look what we have now!!!! We need people like him in congress, not outside looking in. How many overweight people will be offended when during a campaign he gets hit over the head with this in commercials.

recall hearing him in an interview and he was saying that ...

Well, think Bernard Shaw said it -- "If you tell people the truth, they'll kill you!" --

Idea being that truth has to be tempered with humor -- then maybe you have a chance!

I think Alan Grayson is terrific and we desperately need someone like him --

like in the White House!!

46. He badly appraised the situation in Central Florida.
I figure, if he's going to be a loudmouth liberal in a conservative environment, why not just go after the status quo and make the place a better place to live in? Answer: Because Grayson likes the social network of the area with all its flaws.

How can I donate even one penny to someone who hasn't shown me he's ready to roll up his sleeves and attack the real problems in his own backyard?

Presume you're from Florida -- though you seem to be missing a profile --

Sounds more like you personally dislike Grayson --

Think most Democrats are asking that question about the Dem Party -- how could I

possibly donate any $$ to Obama, for instance!

But I have donated to Grayson and will continue to do so --

And, he continues to appear on lists of those we might look to as a challenger

for 2012 --

Alan Grayson is a candidate trying to get his job back in Florida. Gratuitous insults, much less insults made about someone he's not running against, may make liberal activists feel good, but they won't help his campaign be taken seriously; certainly not by me (a supporter in 2010).

It is in the language of schoolyard trash talk. The point of trash talk is to put your opponent off balance so he makes a critical mistake. Trash talk is not gratuitous, it serves a very important purpose.

37. It's not "gratuitous". It's childish.
Is Grayson going to taunt a leader of another nation for being fat, short or ugly? If that's his level of discourse, perhaps he needs to rethink his methods of "debate".

He could have gotten a MUCH bigger reaction if he'd asked Gingrich about his $1 million unsecured line of credit at Tiffany's, while Gingrich's wife was a lobbyist for the company attempting to influence pending legislation Tiffany's way.

His comments are unfortunate.

60. Too bad. I thought you were talking about Newt. Grayson
was the victim here. He was called 'dishonorable' by a lying bully. He chose not to allow himself to be a victim and responded by teaching the bully a lesson. 'Pick on me, and I will not be hiding from you'. I doubt Gingrich will have anything more to say about Grayson.

We complain about bullying all the time here. But when someone stands up to one of the worst bullies in this country, we call the VICTIM a bully for fighting back!

Had Democrats done what Grayson does decades ago, instead of always apologizing and insisting that in the face of these vicious, mindless morons, we should be 'polite', Newt would have learned long ago not to tangle with Democrats and Grayson would not have needed to deal with him now. But ignoring them certainly doesn't work.

I wish this party had three hundred Graysons. NO sniveling, cowardly Republican bully would dare to do what they've been doing to Democrats for decades now.
