Al Gore accuses Barack Obama of bowing 'to pressure from polluters'
Source: The Guardian

=snip=

The former US vice president turned environmental campaigner published http://blog.algore.com/2011/09/confronting_disappointment.html">a blog on his official website, entitled "Confronting disappointment," that castigated Obama personally for pulling the Environmental Protection Agency off the trail of enforcing tougher emissions standards.

Gore's most stinging rebuke in the brief post came when he said: "President Obama appears to have bowed to pressure from polluters who did not want to bear the cost of implementing new restrictions on their harmful pollution," saying the net result will be lung disease and asthma:

On Friday afternoon, as brave and committed activists continued their non-violent civil disobedience outside the White House in protest of the tar sands pipeline that would lead to a massive increase in global warming pollution, President Obama ordered the EPA to abandon its pursuit of new curbs on emissions that worsens disease-causing smog in US cities. Earlier this year, the EPA's administrator, Lisa Jackson, wrote that the levels of pollution now permitted – put in place by the Bush-Cheney administration – are "not legally defensible." Those very same rules have now been embraced by the Obama White House.

Instead of relying on science, President Obama appears to have bowed to pressure from polluters who did not want to bear the cost of implementing new restrictions on their harmful pollution – even though economists have shown that the US economy would benefit from the job creating investments associated with implementing the new technology. The result of the White House's action will be increased medical bills for seniors with lung disease, more children developing asthma, and the continued degradation of our air quality.

1. The OP article does NOT mention the letter that Sunstein sent to the EPA

A copy of the LETTER that President Obama asked Sunstein to send to the EPA

http://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/USEOPWHPO/2011/09/02/file_attachments/56091/Letter.pdf

The letter on the above link explains WHY President Obama had the rule sent back to the EPA for reconsideration.

The media needs to start talking about WHY Obama had the rule sent back to the EPA for reconsideration!!!

2. In the original Guardian article that's in the OP they've embedded a link to this from MSNBC...
As you can see, they cite Obama directly...

Obama halts tighter smog rule, citing 'regulatory burdens'
Republicans wanted it shelved; critics see it as 'huge loss for public health'

=snip=

WASHINGTON — Citing the financial burden in a struggling economy and after Republican protests, President Barack Obama on Friday ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to shelve a proposal to tighten smog standards.

"I have continued to underscore the importance of reducing regulatory burdens and regulatory uncertainty, particularly as our economy continues to recover," Obama said in a statement announcing the order.

Obama said his decision was also meant to streamline future smog rulemaking.

"Work is already underway to update a 2006 review of the science that will result in the reconsideration of the ozone standard in 2013," he said. "Ultimately, I did not support asking state and local governments to begin implementing a new standard that will soon be reconsidered."
