Gov. Jan Brewer is outraged that two federal courts and four different judges (so far) have said that Arizona cannot discriminate against people it doesn't like.
In this case, people who actually work for the state. And who happen to be gay.It started several years ago, when then-Gov. Janet Napolitano decided that Arizona would extend benefits for domestic partners and children of state employees, including those who are gay.
Brewer and the predominantly Republican Legislature decided to change that, rescinding coverage for gay couples and trying to cover their discrimination by dropping unmarried heterosexuals as well. Some of the couples sued the state.
A ruling by a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit this week indicated that if Arizona wanted to deny benefits to all of its employees, the court would have no problem. The trouble arises when the state decides to pick and choose which employees get the benefits based on whose lifestyle it condones.
