House Republicans turned on fellow GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), accusing her of “show boating” for scheduling a news conference to follow President Obama’s speech Thursday.

The lawmakers, who requested anonymity, told The Hill that the GOP presidential nominee hopeful scheduled the conference in “panic” after her performance at the GOP debate Wednesday night in California.

“This is just show boating theater that she’s doing. I doubt very many people will watch. What do we need, another speech?,” one lawmaker told The Hill, noting that the NFL season opener would be under way by the time Bachmann held her 8:30 p.m. EDT news conference.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced that the GOP would not give an official televised response to the president’s address at the joint session of Congress set for 7 p.m. Thursday. Bachmann, however, announced her intention earlier in the day to hold her own news conference in the recording studio in the basement of the Capitol.
