6. 500 KV line tripped out of service
Edited on Thu Sep-08-11 08:30 PM by pokerfan
The outage was triggered after a 500-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage line from Arizona to California tripped out of service, according to the California Independent System Operator. The transmission outage cut the flow of imported power into the most southern portion of California, resulting in wide-spread outages in the region.

<...>

The FBI said the power outage is not related to any terror threat.

10. Reminds me of a song.
Sorry, can't pass up an opportunity to make yet another post about my favorite band. :smoke:

Arcade Fire - 'Neighborhood #3' (Power Out)
This is a powerful version of the song performed live at The Reading Festival (England) in Dec. 2010
(Caution: Possible seizure inducing lighting effects)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5jKwMnW3Y8

I woke up with the power out,
not really something to shout about.
Ice has covered up my parents hands
don't have any dreams don't have any plans.

I went out into the night,
I went out to find some light.
Kids are swingin' from the power lines,
nobody's home, so nobody minds.

I woke up on the darkest night,
neighbors all were shoutin' that they found the light.
(We found the light)
Shadows jumpin' all over the walls
some of them big, some of them small.

I went out into the night.
I went out to pick a fight with anyone.
Light a candle for the kids,
Jesus Christ don't keep it hid!

Woohoo! Woohoo! Woohoo!

Ice has covered up my parents hands
don't have any dreams, don't have any plans.
Growin' up in some strange storm,
nobody's cold, nobody's warm.

I went out into the night,
I went out to find some light.
Kids are dyin' out in the snow,
look at them go, look at them go!

Woohoo!(3x) WOO! Woohoo!(3x)

And the power's out in the heart of man,
take it from your heart put in your hand.(hand)

What's the plan? What's the plan?

Is it a dream? Is it a lie?
I think I'll let you decide.
Just light a candle for the kids,
Jesus Christ don't keep it hid!

Cause nothin's hid, from us kids!
You ain't foolin' nobody with the lights out!

Woohoo!(2x)

And the power's out in the heart of man,
take it from your heart put in your hand.
And there's something wrong in the heart of man,
Take it from your heart and put it in your hand!
(hand!)(the lights out!)(hand!)(right now!)(hand!)

14. +1,000,000,000,000
Our power grid is in piss poor shape because of bare bones spending. I'm afraid it's going to take a major catastrophe before anyone notices.

15. When we have our local power failures during ghastly heat like now,
it's almost always because a power line has sagged a bit too much from the heat and touched a tree branch along the freeway. They send out a tree trimming crew along with a power crew and fix it within an hour or so.

This may very well be a similar, but larger scale, heat-induced problem.

They have solar lanterns around the pool. A solar charger for the cell phone, ice, and candles. They were cheerful.
