East coast flooding? Anyone here affected?

They closed the schools here today and getting to work was difficult, but overall doing well. We had some flooding in our basement after the snowstorms a few years ago so I re-landscaped the backyard, fixed some gutter problems, and bought a bigger sump pump. So far, my preparations seem to have made the difference.

In my backyard, the ground is so soggy that you can sink 6 inches just standing still. The feral cats seem miserable and more skittish than normal. Only the crows are around the feeders.

I'm in Northern VA btw.

1. Northern New Jersey

I'm less than a mile from Paterson flooding (ongoing since two weeks ago).

Six miles away is Little Falls, still underwater.

Part of Route 46 between Wayne and Fairfield is impassible due to water.

In Hawthorne, the roads are jammed due to two main roads being completely flooded.

The Ramapo River in Mahwah supposedly has crested.

Oakland is still flooded.

2. Glad you are ok. I'm a little surprised that the flooding seems to be getting such

little notice in the news and online. Seems to be affecting a lot of folks.

New Jersey is so varied topographically that it's a crap shoot where you live. There are houses in flood plains which get hit 10 out of 10 times. They never catch a break and that's even with missions from the Army Corps of Engineers. Then there are those "close" to streams and rivers and they haven't been flooded for 50+ years until now.

I live on a hill. But if you want down a steep hill on a main road, you hit the floods of Paterson in less than one mile.

4. Spent all day yesterday vacuuming water in the basement.

It's still coming in but has slowed a bit. This is because of a high water table. Our main highway is closed in places because of river flooding and a few roads are closed because they were washed out.

5. For once I am not

I live on the 3rd floor of an old 1809 mill. I do however have a rive running under the building that is running at a pretty darn good clip right now.
