How about a $1 per bullet tax?
If no one wants to implement gun control, let's make the bullets really expensive.

1. You can re-load your own brass.
Lots of shooters do that anyway, it's way cheaper than buying new.

It will be ruled unconstitutional, and rightly so.

44. I would rather a punitive tax on ammo rather than
the ones they have now for tobacco and alcohol. Since those taxes purportedly pay for programs to treat drug addiction and alcoholism, maybe the bullet tax can fund reparations for victims of gun violence.

"maybe the bullet tax can fund reparations for victims of gun violence."

People that are not engaged in gun violence but own and shoot guns should be paying reparations to victims of gun violence?

Why exactly should they be expected to do that?

6. They're too expensive now, in my opinion.
I just started shooting right about the time ammo prices skyrocketed. Target shooting is getting to be an expensive hobby.

I know what you're saying, and we'd all like the same end result, but we'll never agree on the means.

I would be fine with a comprehensive background check.

check. No trouble with the law, no mental health issues, perhaps interview former bosses, co-workers, neighbors.

Of course, no gov't agency has the manpower for that.

Maybe the firearm manufacturers will have to fund the checks.

Meanwhile, competitive shooters who go through thousands of rounds a year are taxed to the point where they can't pursue their hobby.

This idea was idiotic the first ten times someone suggested it, and it's still idiotic now.

A lot of people still hunt to put food on the table. It takes more than just the rounds you kill your game with, you have to stay in practice and keep your weapons sighted to make clean kills. It's expensive enough as it is.

35. I wouldn't support that.

I have a pistol range set up by my house and target shoot 2 or 3 times a week for fun.

That would jack up the cost of recreational shooting so much that I wouldn't have the money to be able to enjoy one of my hobbies.

I think that would penaize people like me too much. A liberal who likes to shoot guns.

A lot of the crazies have just bought their guns not long before their rampages. I'm not sure that would be that much of an impediment.

I personally think that the answer lies more in the realm of somehow making the NICS instant check a bit more inclusive to weed out more people.

Also maybe limit magazine capacity for a pistol to what it was designed for?? On most auto pistols the stock magazines fit totally in the handle of the pistol. A 30 round clip in a pistol would impair it's concealability. It would throw the balance off too. Maybe limit pistol magazine size to what the original design of the pistol permits??

36. So what would that accomplish other than a punative tax.
Edited on Thu Jan-13-11 08:32 AM by Statistical
The shooter fired 30 rounds. So that mass murder would have cost him $30 more? Think someone who is either going to die in the shooting (Cho) or going to prison for life (Laughner) really cares about $30.

A 500%+ tax is punitive for the sake of being punitive. It would do nothing to reduce crime but it would make lawful uses of firearms more difficult. Admit it you simply want to tax them because you don't like them.

One thing you may not have considered is practice. It takes hundreds if not thousands of rounds to become competent with a firearm. There is no requirement to do so but many CCWer do practice regularly to improve their skills. You have now made that 10x as expensive and likely we would see a significant drop in the amount of practice and number of rounds fired.

So no change in crime and lawful gunholders will be practicing less.

Amazing how many of you are sky is falling about gun issues.

Thousands if not hundreds of thousands of rounds are sent down range safely for every 1 round that is use illegaly to injure or kill someone.

Don't you take away my rights to enjoy the shooting sports at the range.

Some here are as nutty on this issue as the Right to Lifers!

You really want the Repukes to control all branches of govt for probably 1st half of this century.

Edited on Thu Jan-13-11 01:06 PM by -..__...
If that sounds unreasonable, the tax could be tiered so a person pays more for bigger words, and less for smaller ones?

Think of all the bandwidth that could saved... never mind that we'd be spared long winded diatribes (especially from those who go to
great lengths to impress others with their vocabulary).

People would also think twice before going on a long winded rant or flaming another poster...

"Damn! That smack down cost $50.00. The OP must have really deserved it".

Probably the best benefit of all would be a reduction of people posting idiotic and ridiculous comments and/or ideas... for example: suggesting that a $1.00 tax per bullet would be a good thing.

52. Many people legally carry firearms in public ...
and often practice at the range to allow them to master the use of their firearm.

What your tax would accomplish is to stop all practice. The result could easily lead to more death caused by people who would have hit an attacker but missed and hit an innocent bystander.
