Fox News Panel Praise Obama Speech, Question ‘Uproarious Crowd’s’ Reaction

by Frances Martel | 11:34 pm, January 12th, 2011

The first impressions in light of President Obama’s speech at tonight’s memorial for the victims of the Arizona shooting, and, at least on Fox News, the reviews are overwhelming positive. Charles Krauthammer, Chris Wallace, and Brit Hume seemed a bit uncomfortable with all the hootin’ and hollerin’, but all seemed blown away by the President’s words.

For Hume, the President’s greatest achievement during the speech was rolling with the punches– “the audience was really in control of this event,” he noted, but President Obama “went with it.” “He behaved as some of his partisans have not, with considerable dignity and grace,” he beamed, despite noting, once again, that “the mood in that auditorium suggested that the sense of mournfulness that you might’ve expected and sobriety that you mightve expected was not there.” Wallace agreed that it was “a little bit more of a pep rally than expected,” though seconded the positive reaction to President Obama, and also commented on the words of Daniel Hernandez, highlighting the fact that he spoke without notes and that his humility was exemplary.

Krauthammer seemed too impressed with the President’s words to give the audience that much attention. Discussing the moment when the President told the audience that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords had opened her eyes, he praised that “the way he seized the moment and he brought the audience to that and became so inspirational” was “quite remarkable and extremely effective.” He added that he thought the President was “already on a rebound,” but that this speech would do wonders to help his approval on the way up.

Overall, the panel was pleased, though skeptical that the tone would be a permanent positive change. “After Oklahoma City,” Wallace offered, “I don’t think any permanent lessons are learned in this country.”

Faux news pundits say President Obama is on a rebound? Wow.

1. Faux News is under close watch right now

Don't worry, Obama will be the communistic Kenyan devil again really soon.

Faux Noise is a shit station and even when they 'do get it right', I don't trust it as anything more than rope-a-dope.

That channel is anti-Democracy and anti-intelligence. It should be on the high 500s on my Cable service right beside the porn channels.

3. News Hounds: Only Niggling Complaints From Fox News Panel About Obama’s Tucson Memorial Speech
Edited on Thu Jan-13-11 02:22 AM by Turborama
Reported by Ellen - January 13, 2011 -

You know President Obama’s Tucson Memorial speech had to be pretty darned great if the Fox News panel assembled to critique it – a panel that did not include a single Democrat or liberal – found only its length to criticize. Of course, they took some jabs at Democrats and - shades of Paul Wellstone’s memorial – of the not-somber-enough tone. But the panel blamed the audience, not Obama.

The panel consisted of Brit Hume, Chris Wallace and Charles Krauthammer. It probably would have been too much to ask for Alan Colmes or Alicia Menendez or Kirsten Powers or Bob Beckel to be on the panel. But there wasn’t even Juan Williams or Mara Liasson.

Nevertheless, there was nary a harsh word for Obama. The audience was a different story.

Krauthammer nearly gushed. He called the speech a “remarkable display of oratory and of oratorical skill, both in terms of the tone and the content.” Krauthammer noted the “inappropriate” cheering of the audience but said it was not the president’s fault. The speech was “so inspirational,” Krauthammer said, “You could only conclude that he did exactly what he had to do in a difficult environment. I think that tone (the raucousness of the audience) seemed odd and off-the-key for most of the event in a situation of sorrow and grief and yet he turned it around… in a way that I thought was extremely successful.”

Perhaps what really pleased the panel was Obama’s supposed criticism of the left. (I didn't get that take-away but you can read Obama's remarks for yourself http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/01/12/remarks-president-barack-obama-memorial-service-victims-shooting-tucson">here.) Krauthammer said, “He (Obama) did in a way distance himself and offer a critique of those who had used the occasion to attack others. And then he spoke about elevating the civil discourse in the country but not, he said, the way the left and those who have attacked (have).” Krauthammer called it a “brilliant rhetorical approach” that was a “very interesting and successful way of advocating a civil discourse without in any way endorsing those on the left who were talking about uncivil discourse as a cause of this event.”

9. Hannah, this is not directed just at you.
This is just my two cents, but , I think you guys are missing what's going on over at Faux News these days. Ever since the Regurgelican majority has taken its seat in the House, Faux has been jumping on some obviously skewed polls that say Repubs AND Obama have both seen their favorable ratings go UP. Faux has literally JUMPED on this to indicate that the general public DEMANDS that all further political action should move sharply to the right, as indicated by approval ratings going up for a president seen as moving more toward the center to work with the OBVIOUSLY (sarcasm) popular righties and their equally popular agenda. In this context, Faux HAS to praise the president, when they can do so without blunting their ongoing propaganda message, to shore up belief in this new 'poll-backed' meme that the American people want more, not less, MORE right wing political philosophy to guide this country.

Watch what I say. As long as Faux can push this meme successfully, there will be smatterings of praise for the president thrown in to their propaganda - they HAVE TO, to keep up the manufactured illusion that the president's seeming move toward at least a more moderate, if not right of center, agenda is just what the American people are hungering for. And thus, that THEY have been right, all along.

As soon as the propaganda shows signs that it is becoming ineffective or transparent, even this smattering of praise for Obama will evaporate with the latest methane laden echoes of their evening 'news' broadcast.

Just watch.

10. The Faux morning crowd didn't like the fact he sat in the front row
and tee shirts were passed out (Together We Thrive). Also too "Wellstone-like".

About 3 minutes was all I could take of their swill.
