Every once in awhile he'll call and say he misses the mist, fog and gray skies, but he's pretty acclimated. He'll go "it's 87 - beautiful day" and I just roll my eyes.

ANYTHING becomes "outdoor seating" when the sun shines. Throw out a few tables and chairs on the sidewalk in front of a bus stop and people will still say "let's eat outside!".

As noted, it did happen 120 years ago. This is the stuff that fuels right wingers criticism of CC and GW. There are often things that are a result of multiple normal variables that just come together to create an abnormal result.

I don't know exactly on this case. I don't have time to look at the data and figure out if anything other than the temperature is not normal.

I wish more scientists would have the balls to come out and admit that we have no clue how much damage we are doing, but we know we are doing damage. Whenever a climatologist comes out with a doomsday prediction that doesn't come true, it hurts all studies of climate.

Remember the UN predictions 20 years ago that said there would be huge numbers of climate change refugees by now...well, that didn't happen because temperatures didn't rise as quickly as they predicted. They still rose, just not at the rate they expected.

One thing that was pounded into my head by my college economics professors was "never be afraid to say you don't know." Anyone who respects economics understands that most predictions are just guesses. As an economist, I take what I do know, combine it with what may happen, and go from there. Anything I produce is taken as a guide and not fact. And my career has benefited greatly from this method.

But back to the topic at hand. Usually, if something is equaling conditions that have been previously recorded, it's not

we had one of the coldest Julys on record here in Seattle. We turned our heat on in June and July. While the east coast baked, we froze here. We were still wearing wool in July, the whole month passed without any warmth to speak of

So believe me, 9 days over 80 really IS a big deal.
We've had hot weather before, in fact, two years ago we had the hottest temperature ever recorded in Seattle, 104 degrees.
but the miserable heat only lasted a few days.
So just because the rest of the world is getting hotter, it doesn't mean that some places won't get colder too.

It seems that everyone i know is sauntering around the world. Looking at ice bergs in Alaska, hiking the Himalayas, my neighbor is in Turkey right now... I've been offered so many trips to so many places. A month in Moscow with my cousin the flight surgeon. I've turned all of them down. And especially on intelligent forums like this one, travel is seen as keenly important to one's education.

Well, I've declined to do it because I'd rather not use up the fuel. And all I've ever gotten for it is flak. I'd dearly have loved to have traveled the world when it was a slower more beautiful place. I saw this coming in the 60's. I've really suffered watching this. Well, I'm listening to radio out of Montpellier, France right now. I can enjoy without barfing out CO2.
