"Dear Mr. President . . . Thank You"
Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 02:56 PM by markpkessinger
Dear Mr. President:

We would like to extend our sincere thanks for your gracious inclusion of some of our talking points in your speech last night. We look forward to your continued cooperation as we continue our efforts to confront the central challenge of our time: the evisceration of every last vestige of the sloth-encouraging, dependency-creating behemoth dubiously known as the "social safety net," and the removal, once and for all, of the ruinous beast known as the "middle class lifestyle."

Yours very trruly,

David H. and Charles Koch

Ir was a facetious, if rueful post.

You cam Google my username (under which you will find YEARS of posts on many sites), and you will clearly find I am no disciple of Rove. I will match progressive cred with anybody here. Yes, I have been very critical of President Obama, and increasingly so within the past year -- I believe that's my right as a Democrat, particularly when I see a president throwing what i believe to be Democratic principles under the bus left and right. Sorry if my refusal to march in lockstep, merely because my loyalties lie more with principles than with whomever happens to be wearing the party label, offends you.

8. I'm wondering how low Obama can go.
The thesis in the OP was that Obama included Republican anti-tax and anti-safety net talking points in his speech. Do you somehow disagree, or do you just want people who think he did to shut up?

Obama's jobs bill will cut payroll taxes, which will give less money to Social Security. Free trade is also in there, with cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.

23. that is where the Reagan Democrats came from
Union workers, making more money than the rest of us working stiffs, are perhaps in the top 40% who get most of the money.

So, it does not seem that they are looking out for the bottom 60% here, no.

14. Here was
Edited on Fri Sep-09-11 03:18 PM by ProSense
the was the only mention of Social Security in the President's speech:

<...>

We all remember Abraham Lincoln as the leader who saved our Union. But in the middle of a Civil War, he was also a leader who looked to the future – a Republican president who mobilized government to build the transcontinental railroad; launch the National Academy of Sciences; and set up the first land grant colleges. And leaders of both parties have followed the example he set.

Ask yourselves – where would we be right now if the people who sat here before us decided not to build our highways and our bridges; our dams and our airports? What would this country be like if we had chosen not to spend money on public high schools, or research universities, or community colleges? Millions of returning heroes, including my grandfather, had the opportunity to go to school because of the GI Bill. Where would we be if they hadn’t had that chance?

How many jobs would it have cost us if past Congresses decided not to support the basic research that led to the Internet and the computer chip? What kind of country would this be if this Chamber had voted down Social Security or Medicare just because it violated some rigid idea about what government could or could not do? How many Americans would have suffered as a result?

No single individual built America on their own. We built it together. We have been, and always will be, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all; a nation with responsibilities to ourselves and with responsibilities to one another. Members of Congress, it is time for us to meet our responsibilities.

<...>

Definitely not a Koch talking point!
