Who were the COMPLETE FUCKING ASSHOLES cheering at the begining of the speech?

Just watched it now and there were obviously young people going "whoooo" and such in the background for the first little bit. What the hell happened to people? No sense of propriety.

it was my own grandfather's funeral. that's what i do. how i cope.

Apparently there are precious few of us around here who were not taught that memorial services, funerals, baccalaureates, etc. are now sporting events/pep rallies where whooping/hollering/whistling/cheering/raucous clapping/foot-stomping is de rigueur.

I gave up trying to record our son's Baccalaureate because the atmosphere was like a basketball game and no one could even hear what was being said.

I have been to many funerals (unfortunately) and not even ONE of them included rowdy applause, cheering etc.

I don't understand it, but then I am pushing 62, so maybe the MTV-ization of America passed me by..

15. The opening bothered me very much.

I teach at a college, and it seems as though more and more, students that age are becoming tone deaf to what is appropriate at different kinds of situations. I have been to enough Irish-American wakes and funerals ( my grandparents and parents for starters) to know how healing laughter, storytelling and joy can be in those moments. I have also been to a lot of college sporting college events Initially it felt as though some students thought the Arizona basketball team was getting ready to take the floor.

What I also noticed, though, was a profound shift when President Obama spoke. His carriage, his humane dignity and his basic human decency modelled what his speech asked us to do - be our better selves. At the end, when there was applause, laughter and cheering it was appropriate, cathartic, and potentially healing. I think the students in that audience were given a great gift and they recognized it.

a simple email to the ones attending, with a few "suggestions" could have helped them to realize that it was not a pep-rally...

6. It was a little jarring at first, thinking of the parents of Christina

there (and I assume they were there)as well as others who lost family members. But, I look at it as a celebration of life event, like a wake... Apparently that was the way most of the audience was taking it as well.

The new alcoholic 'Weeper of the House' decided instead of a memorial service for one of his colleagues, he would host a cocktail party to show his reverence for the events that occurred in Tucson.
