A sewage pipe in Reading broke Friday, the second time in two weeks, sending raw sewage down the Schuylkill River along communities like Pottstown and North Coventry.
Only this time, the threat that the raw sewage could make its way to area streets was palpable, given that flood waters had filled streets like Industrial Highway and College Drive in Pottstown and River Road and Riverside Drive in North Coventry and were still receding Friday evening.

Residents living on Shasta Avenue in Dunsmuir received a watery wake up call pre-dawn Wednesday when a 12-inch main water pipe ruptured and filled the street with a river.
The break left homes on a four-block stretch without water and lowered the water pressure for most of the rest of the town, according to Dunsmuir Utilities Supervisor Ron LaRue.

LaRue said it took all day Wednesday to stop the gusher. “There were five of us out here,” he said Thursday during cleanup. “We started at 2:30 in the morning and didn't finish until 7 p.m.”

Sewer line collapses beneath tot lot in city
Wastewater crews worked more than 24 hours Thursday, Friday and into the morning hours today to replace a broken 15-inch sewer line located beneath the Devonshire Tot Lot at the corner of Devonshire Road and Richland Avenue.

"The sewer line was located about 21 feet below the ground surface. In fact we uncovered a manhole that we could never find because it was covered with 4 feet of dirt," added Murphy.
"We are replacing the old iron sewer pipe with about 59 feet of heavy wall plastic pipe. And since we are here, we will replace another section of 15-inch pipe under the park. We ran our video camera through that section of pipe and found only about 5 inches open. So we decided to be proactive and take care of that before it became a problem later on," declared Murphy.

"We can't neglect our sewer system. Just because it is out of sight doesn't mean it is out of our minds. We have arranged with Columbia Gas to give us video tapes they make in the city sewer lines when they install their new gas lines. We are trying to find problems before they become a bigger problem. That is preventive maintenance," Murphy noted.
