Oscar winner Cliff Robertson dies in NY at 88
Edited on Sat Sep-10-11 08:17 PM by cal04
Won for role as mentally disabled man in 'Charly'; played JFK in 'PT-109'
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/44470996/ns/today-entertainment/

Cliff Robertson, the handsome movie actor who played John F. Kennedy in "PT-109," won an Oscar for "Charly" and was famously victimized in a 1977 Hollywood forgery scandal, has died. He was 88.

His secretary of 53 years, Evelyn Christel, says he died Saturday afternoon in Stony Brook, N.Y., of natural causes.

Robertson never elevated into the top ranks of leading men, but he remained a popular actor from the mid-1950s into the following century. His later roles included kindly Uncle Ben in the "Spider-Man" movies.

"My father was a loving father, devoted friend, dedicated professional and honorable man," daughter Stephanie Saunders said in a statement. "He stood by his family, friends, and colleagues through good times and bad. He made a difference in all our lives and made our world a better place. We will all miss him terribly."

15. Goodbye Cliff!
A classy man with charisma and penache has left us and we are all a little the sadder for it, but happy that his performances will remain on screen to entertain us for eons to come.

13. I'm remembering him...
in that moldering top hat as a lost pioneer in the Twilight Zone episode, A Hundred Yards Over the Rim.

14. Mr. Robertson did a great job in 'PT-109'
He communicated the calm nature and brave nature of Lt. Kennedy. The film also was very accurate in historical terms.

How few Americans today know the story. I brought it up with one my city councilmen a few years back. The guy had no idea.

16. He was so good in so many films.
He played JFK in P.T.109 and a politician very much like Richard Nixon in The Best Man (1964). In Star 80 he played Hugh Hefner and he was cool and calculating with Robert Redford in Three Days Of The Condor. Great talent.

22. "with Robert Redford in Three Days Of The Condor" - outside the New York Times.

Higgins: Hey, Turner! How do you know they'll print it? You can take a walk. But how far if they don't print it?

Joe Turner: They'll print it.

Higgins: How do you know?

21. So sorry to hear this -
I always enjoyed his performances and even watched a little of "PT-109" tonight before I knew about his death.

As an aside, September 9 was his birthday.
