Religion Does Not Color Views About Violence
September 8, 2011

OIC countries slightly less likely to see military attacks on civilians as sometimes justified
by Dalia Mogahed and Ahmed Younis

ABU DHABI -- A Gallup analysis of more than 130 countries nearly a decade after the 9/11 terrorist attacks suggests that one's religious identity and level of devotion have little to do with one's views about attacking civilians. Almost all residents surveyed in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa who reject attacks on civilians say religion is an important part of their daily lives -- much like those who say attacks are sometimes justified.

1. People felt free to identify themselves as non-religious in this survey?

2. Religion colors views about EVERYTHING
Religion is not necessarily "good". Those who continually expect some kind of special status of exalted decency due to adherence to a faith are selfish, close-minded and arrogant.

3. Yep. And some of them are sometimes VIOLENT also...
I know, I've been 'kinda' tortured by Catholic nuns when I was only 6-years-old.

Go figure...

4. A couple near here beat their daughter to death (and another barely lived) based on religious belief
I don't recall the last time I heard of somebody beating a child to death with a plumbing supply line because science or reason told them to do so.

5. That's terrible.
Just as bad as folks who deny medicine and treatment to sick kids because they think they can "pray away" the sickness.

Evil, evil people.

6. It is. Sadly it's happened just like that to more than one child.
The Pearl family run a ministry called No Greater Joy that's all about beating children so they'll be submissive to the parents and thus submission to God will come naturally. One of their recommendations is to beat children with plumbing supply line, and to buy it in bulk so a piece can always be seen nearby as an incentive to good behavior. They also tell their followers to beat children until they stop crying. So what sometimes happens is that these prolonged beatings cause the muscles to break down (it's the same thing as tenderizing a steak) and the materials from the broken cells cause the kidneys to fail. Aside from torture it's a medical condition mostly associated with natural disasters and building collapses.

8. My friend Ada's father would put a gun to her head and say he'd kill her if she ever dishonored
her Lebanese family. She ran away but always pined for her Mother and her cooking. She was an amazing woman, loving and boundlessly generous, whip smart and efficient.
However she never found her place and peace in this world and died from alcohol and drugs. R.I.P beautiful Ada.

There is no peace in any social organization that dishonors women and children.

There is no peace in any social organization that dishonors women and children...or a country.
