Keep Conservatives United, a Super PAC backing Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), on Tuesday will start hitting Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) on his stance on illegal immigration in a radio ad that will air during conservative talk radio shows in South Carolina.
The ad portrays Bachmann as hawkish on illegal immigration while claiming Perry has failed to clamp down during his tenure as governor of a border state. "Michele Bachmann believes employers should be required to check the legal status of people they hire with E-Verify," the ad says. "Perry doesn't, so illegals take jobs."
As Perry's campaign has ramped up, many conservatives have pointed towards immigration as one area where the tough-talking governor's record leans more moderate. He signed a bill in 2001 allowing children of undocumented immigrants to qualify for in-state tuition, but has been critical of federal government efforts to secure the border and of the federal Dream Act.
Although former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is also polling ahead of Bachmann in the presidential race, the anti-Perry ads reflect an awareness by those supporting Bachmann that she and Perry occupy roughly the same political space, making him the No. 1 target for those hoping for a Bachmann White House.
