Just got back from the grocery store. They are doing some massive remodeling.
When I got to the front, I noticed that the self-checkout lanes were gone, so asked the cashier. Yep - its permanent. Bub-bye!

Good on Weis. Using local labor to do a complete renovation of the store AND going to cashier only checkout for this 24/7 location.

:applause:

1. Glad someone is hiring. I'd give them my business if we had one.

3. I appreciate that they are hiring. But I like self-check.
Since I am in the minority on this, I usually get out faster than most other customers.

4. Me too ... I tend to hit the grocery store every other day ... to get fresh
fruits and veggies ... so I rarely have more than 10 items.

I can zip through self check out with my eyes closed.

6. I liked it too.
It was quick.

(They did open 2 express 1-10 and 1 express 10-15 items lanes that didn't exist before in that spot).

That said, I like the idea of jobs even more. If a kid gets a job and I have to wait an additional 5 minutes to check out, all the better.

15. I use self check-out when I only have a few items.
But sometimes it is easier to use the self check-out because there are not enough cashiers in the other lanes. I often wonder with so many people needing jobs why my local Kroger could not hire more cashiers.

16. I'd wondered about the potential for theft. Unless they go through every bag at the door
comparing every item to the receipt, what was preventing the theft from self-checkouts?

13. Hopefully, at least one store in your town will keep the self-checkout
so minors can buy/steal booze easier. Otherwise you will have teens hanging outside of stores asking adults to buy for them.

37. Believe me, no one gets through the self check-out
with alcohol without showing ID. I am 72 years old and buy wine quite frequently at Kroger here in North Georgia and I always have to show ID.

I never, ever use them. I don't use ATMs either. I like to keep tellers working.

22. Unfortunately, the only time I can access my money is after normal banking hours, unless
I want to waste a half an hours waiting in line to access my money. No thanks. I'll take an ATM anytime over a teller.

18. I love self-checkouts.
Nobody goes through a self-checkout with a huge loaded cart or checks.

Plus, if I forget the reusable bags, I can usually get everything in 1 or 2 of the plastic bags whereas if you go through a cashier you end up with 10-15.

"Please don't put that in a bag, it's already in a bag..."

20. That's great and all...
but it really makes me think of how some things don't make a lot of sense.

OK, we just heard within the past few days that BoA is planning on cutting 30,000 jobs...6,000 of them this year.

I know many here hate BoA because they're bloodsuckers. I think they're bloodsuckers.

I know people would love nothing better than to see BoA (and a lot of other big corporations) go down the tubes.

But how do people reconcile their wishes for the demise of those institutions with the fact that with that demise comes the loss of jobs?

Yet...here we are cheering the decision of a local Albertson's to do away with self-checkouts, thereby saving the jobs of, what...20 people? Or less.

Like I said, yeah. Good for those 20 people.

But something I think we need to consider is that boycotting companies with the intent to hurt them or put them out of business...or hoping for them to fail...puts a whole LOT of jobs in jeopardy.

This is what doesn't make sense to me.

How do people cheer on the minor gains but ignore the major losses...

If the cost of shutting down an amoral and immoral business is losing jobs, so be it.

24. BoA isn't Auschewitz
Edited on Mon Sep-12-11 08:29 PM by pipi_k
To compare it to Auschewitz is an insult to all who died there.

Also, the phrase "amoral business" has no meaning to the innocent kids of some low level bank worker who loses his or her job and can't afford to feed or house those kids.

I can hear it now...

"Sorry, kids. We lost the house and have to live in the car for a while and take showers in the truck stop, but thank God I don't work for that amoral company anymore!!"

Maybe that would be OK for some people to tell their kids, but nobody has the right to wish it on someone else.

25. Hiding behind children to defend corrupt business is beneath contempt.
Who cares about all the very real people BoA stole from and made broke, desperate and homeless (or dead) and will continue to steal from? Better to defend a company because its demise might make widdle children sad. Sickening. Absolutely sickening.

26. It's about a lot more than just "making widdle children sad"
Edited on Mon Sep-12-11 09:41 PM by pipi_k
It might make little children dead.

As in a family with a kid that needs special equipment or care to stay alive and the insurance pays for it.

Or maybe grandma is in a nursing home and the family pays for it.

Whatever...fuck the kid. Fuck grandma. To hell with a whole family that might find itself homeless and without health care.

If that's how you feel about it, then that's your right.

But you don't have the right to take someone else's job away from him.

PS...and I'm not "defending" corrupt business. I'm merely asking a question about how people deal with not giving a shit about the people who might be put out of work if XX Big Business goes down the tubes. That's not "defending" the business. It's defending the ordinary people.
