Our little city's labor issues

So I have been covering the Labor-side of the city's negotiations for the local monthly news.

here's my original post: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...
and the news story:http://southtahoenow.com/story/09/12/2011/more-city-ser...

Update

The agenda for the city council meeting this morning has NO mention of the budget or layoffs...it will only be addressed at the THURSDAY meeting set for 7pm...

I knew the date was sticky for some reason, and last night as I was checking with my teenage babysitter, I realized...

It's 'back to school night' - from 5:15 to 7pm...how conveeenient! this involves all schools, from elementary to high school, ALL parents in the whole city are expected to attend...

there goes our public outcry, nobody will be there...It has been rumored that the council is planning on just ramming through the budget and layoffs. Now I don't doubt it for a minute...

what bullshit!

3. I swear, I am too much of an activist to be a reporter!

I have been like this since I first got into news and storytelling... the feeling of "we've got to DO something!"

Unfortunately, my editor is a dyed-in-the-wool cynic, and says that shady is the name of the game. There is a huge anti-employee sentiment that has been fed by the other news outlets and the city council bad mouthing the employees for not coming to the table. So if nobody shows up, and the cuts happen, we won't realize how bad it is until the snow is up to our asses and the recreation center is gutted.

ugh!
I guess I should just go to the union guy and ask him if i can join the ranks as an activist...maybe there's a PR job in it for me...

5. If the public does not approve of the action, they can simply replace the council.
