Oregon GOP Dropping Antigay Stance

Oregon's Republican Party announced that it will strip antigay language from its 2012 platform, The Oregonian reports.

The move was made to bring the party more toward the center in a state that has become dominated by Democratic politics on the city and state level.

"We want the public to take another look at the Republican Party and our policies," Oregon GOP spokesman Greg Leo told The Oregonian Tuesday. Oregon has not given its electoral votes to a Republican since Ronald Reagan's reelection campaign in 1984. No Republican has been elected governor since 1987.

1. Maybe the Oregon GOP doesn't have big enough audience of wingnuts to pander to,

but it's hard to see this happening in several other states -for a long time.

While I'm glad to see that they've cleaned up their platform, they aren't doing it because it's the right thing to do. They are just trying to get a few more votes. If they believed they could maintain that platform here in Oregon, they would most assuredly leave the language in there.

4. Great news!

Sure, maybe they're only doing for, what is to them, pragmatic electoral reasons but whne Civil Rights passed in the 60s some only heeded the law because it was the law. But as the decades went on what was law became social norm and what was social norm eventually became a social value; racism is shunned and scorned.

Let's face it, epiphanies only happen in the bible. In the real world these things take time. The fact we're moving in the right direction is cause for celebration.
