Perry 'taken aback' by debate crowd reaction

TAMPA, FL -- The morning after a sometimes-rocky appearance in front of a Tea Party debate audience, Gov. Rick Perry said he was "taken aback" by cheers from some crowd members on a hypothetical question of whether a young man who decides not to buy health insurance should be refused care if he develops a life-threatening illness and be left to die.

"I was a bit taken aback by that myself," Perry told NBC News and the Miami Herald after appearing at a breakfast fundraiser in Tampa.

"We're the party of life. We ought to be coming up with ways to save lives."

Perry distinguished from that the issue of "justice," reiterating his strong support and "respect" for the death penalty on a state-by-state basis. "But the Republican party ought to be about life and protecting, particularly, innocent life," he added.

5. A little late Governor

but hey grateful however small and however late. The time to have said that would have been right then at that moment. "We do not allow people to die." I am sure no one would have minded stopping the debate to point that very simple fact out, making it crystal clear, As Americans we do not do this. But the moment has passed.

Uh, sure Governor. Whatever lets you sleep at night. By the way, about that protecting innocent life thing, would you mind sparing a word or two for any of the men you've signed death warrants for? Maybe for Cameron Willingham? Does that name ring a bell for you at all, Governor?

Now, in "respect" to the death penalty, what is it for? A deterrence? I mean, considering the sheer number of people the State of Texas has homicided over the years, you'd think crime would be a thing of the past throughout the state, but that's not the case. In fact, every time Texas kills an inmate, it seems like the list just gets longer with more people sentenced to die all the time. Surely this isn't anything as distasteful as plain old-fashioned blood lust, is it Governor? Are you bloodthirsty?
