A soft breeze from the northwest is bringing in more than fall-like weather into the area, it is also bringing hazy skies and an acrid smell from a Minnesota wildfire, according to an alert from the National Weather Service.
Smoke from a large wildfire in Northeastern Minnesota has been moving into Northern Illinois Tuesday afternoon. Although the fire is more than 400 miles northwest of the area the combination of sinking air and northerly winds behind a cold front has moved the smoke into the area.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the smoke is being carried along a jet stream from a fire in Pagami Creek, Minnesota. As many as 200 firefighters are involved in the effort to strike the 60,000-acre fire in Minnesota.
According to The Associated Press, The fire started Aug. 18 with a lighting strike 20 miles from Ely, but began spreading quickly this week in windy, dry conditions. The fire raced 16 miles east in a single day from Monday to Tuesday.
