Microsoft unveils its new Windows 8 operating system (BBC)
Microsoft has taken the wraps off the next generation of its Windows operating system.

Windows 8 is designed to run on tablet computers, as well as desktop and laptop PCs.

The software, which is due to be released in 2012 will work on the popular ARM-designed low power processors for the first time.

Microsoft has been under pressure to come up with an answer to Apple's iOS and Google's Android platforms.

Unveiling Windows 8 at the Build developers' conference in California, Windows division president Steven Sinofsky declared: "We re-imagined Windows. From the chipset to the user experience."

Well, this affects me because my employers have always been Microsoft-obsequious -- otherwise, I wouldn't care.

7. I have a Win 7 laptop
but found I needed to keep an XP box going to run a lot of my financial software. I have two reconditioned boxes I alternate between when one of them conks out and needs to be fixed. I will keep them going as long as possible.

Win7 has glitzy kiddie eye candy features I find supremely annoying and few adjustments for the sight handicapped. It's also incredible bloatware. To say I'm unhappy with the changes it brought is a vast understatement.

XP remains the best of the bunch.

4. WIndows 8 isn't "coming out" yet.
This is an early developer preview, so that software developers can start testing and developing their applications for it. The media is making a big deal out of it simply because this is the first chance that people outside of MS have had to put their hands on it.

Windows 8 won't actually be released until late 2012, more than a year from now and three years after the release of Windows 7.
