Four years ago I worked for a non profit agency for the developmentally disabled. They ran the full gamut from very high functioning Downs people to severely impairedme, and everything in between. Although I worked with the most severely disabled, I was routinely floated into other rooms. The "in between" were the people with the most behaviors.
I was once assigned to work in another room with a 30 man who had a fixation with ropes and long haired women. Someone left out some string and I had long brown hair. They did not tell me all the details of his behaviors. He tried to strangle me and I ran down the hall with him chasing me, and other female staff, down the halls. He was eventually subdued by two very BIG male staff and put in a "quiet room". After this, those of us involved in this chase asked for our own quiet time, and were told to leave for as long as we needed. Tell me how this would translate to the for profit business world? Time is MONEY.
Another time in the room (again floating), there was client who defecated in his pants. There was a woman in this room who saw him do this and had Prader Wiley (look it up) and well, thought this was her "dinner". I had to separate the two of them and them take the woman to the nurses station, and clean up the the entire mess. Want LUNCH after that? Not me. I just wanted to smell the fresh AIR and get out of there for a time. No problem. They TOLD ME to leave and collect myself. Tell me how this would translate to the for profit business world? TIME IS MONEY!!!!!
I did not get vacation time, but 15 sick days a year, or as we called them, STAFF mental health days. Oh, don't DARE take a Monday or Friday as a sick day? In this place???? No, nobody cared WHEN you took a sick day, or time during the day away. WHY? Time is MONEY. Not in this line of work, because if STAFF was having emotional/mental health issues of their own dealing with these people, they could not only not do their jobs, but make matters worse. For profit business world?
Do not get me wrong. I love working with this population, and children with similar disabilities, but one size does not fit all, and this line of work does NOT correlate to business for profit society. However, there is a NEED for people to work in this field. Unfortunately, in today's world and Teabaggers society, we, and them, are no better than DIRT because we are not making MONEY for somebody,
