How can I see the BBC news in the USA (not BBC America)

broadcasts from around the world, some in english, some not as i remember.
Came to realize there were entire wars we were not told about.
Bit of a shock really.
became fond of shortwave but the radio i bought from radio shack left a lot to be desired.

5. Are you wanting BBC One or BBC World News or BBC news channel?

They are all different channels.

BBC World News, which is supported by commercials and available outside of the UK is easy to find a stream for or pick up with a dish.

BBC One and BBC news channel are intended for the UK market only and I don't know of any stream for those. It doesn't appear that the msnbc.eu site has anything but BBC World News.

9. On my Roku, the channel link I have is for the domestic BBC News Channel.

This is not the BBC World News link (i.e. the advertising one) - and the BBC News Channel has a lot of domestic UK news on it. I don't know what link they are pulling it from when they made the Roku channel but at least it is live, 24/7 and without adverts. Plus the BBC News Channel simulcasts the BBC One newscasts - News at One, Six and Ten - but no regional optouts of course.

If you want proper UK TV, there's a company who will host you a Freeview receiver (or DVR) in the London area and attach it to a Slingbox which you can then watch remotely. You will of course pay them rent and Internet fees and you will have to buy a TV Licence if you want it permanently. However this is the only 100% known legal way to watch UK TV over the Internet.

If feeds of UK domestic TV do pop up they are generally illegal and temporary.

... you can sign up for a UK Proxy Server, and rig up your web browser so that sites in the UK *think* that you are really in the UK. Then you can use the BBC iPlayer. Or even: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone/watchlive/

Furthermore I got Roku for the Netflix when the only thing on the Roku *was* Netflix.

BBC World Service stopped broadcasting specifically to North America on shortwave many years ago and earlier this year discontinued the Carribbean service (which some people on the east coast could catch as an alternative to the missing North America service.

Of course there's plenty of stuff on shortwave - even crazier biblethumping, Radio Vietnam, or Radio China International - the Beijing Hour makes for some interesting listening from time to time.

13. You can't access BBC iPlayer (for television) with a non-UK IP address, BUT...

you can easily access all the BBC radio services online, and programs are archived for a week. (Go figure.)

There are six services broadcast in the UK:

BBC1: Pop and rock
BBC2: From what I see, very eclectic programming
BBC3: Classical music and fine arts programming
BBC4: Talk, sort of like the news service of NPR
BBC5: Sports
BBC6: More alternative pop and rock

(UK residents may want to correct my perceptions of these services.)

Then there's BBC World Service, also available online.

But I'm afraid we Americans are out of luck when it comes to UK television. Neither BBC nor ITV will allow non-Brits to view online.

To be fair, American TV networks ban people with non-U.S. IP addresses.

17. You can cheat

You just need a UK-based IP address and the BBC website will accept you as a resident and you'll be able to view any programme via iplayer from the BBC website.

There are a few websites like this one who apparently offer a free service to get access to UK-only services. I can't say how good or bad they each are but they're worth investigating.
