Even in heavily Democratic California, President Barack Obama's job approval rating has plummeted among voters, largely on his handling of the economy, according to a new Field Poll. Though Obama is strongly favored to win California in his re-election bid next year, the poll suggests many Democrats may vote for him only begrudgingly, and it is yet another indication of weakening support nationwide.

"When you're seeing vulnerability in a state like California, I think that really is ominous for his national standing," Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo said. For the first time since Obama took office in 2009, less than half of California voters – 46 percent – approve of the job he is doing, just two percentage points more than disapprove, according to the poll.

Obama's decline has been quick and widespread: As little as three months ago, his approval rating in California was 54 percent. Since June, his rating has suffered double-digit percentage drops among Democrats, nonpartisans, Central Valley residents, men, African Americans, Asian Americans and voters over 65.

It has fallen nearly 20 points since Field's post-inaugural measure in March 2009 had him at 65 percent approval. Though a plurality of Californians remain inclined to re-elect Obama, his margin is slimmer than before. Forty-nine percent of California voters are inclined to re-elect him, according to the poll, five percentage points more than are inclined not to.

2. The last time I remember California determining a presidential election

was in 1968, and then they went for Nixon. I think the time before that was 1916.

6. As a matter of fact I recall the Networks calling and Jimmy Carter conceding

the election in 1980 before the California polls even closed. It was like at 9pm Eastern time.

3. No, it's not a big deal...............because what the obstructionist

repukes were hoping to prevent by blocking success for America and Obama at every opportunity - the emergence of the empowering and motivating Candidate Obama - has come to pass.

I've noticed that our Pres is getting a great reception with his "Pass this bill" speeches. Even though Pres O has a low approval rate and the average American is depressed at our economic prospects, these huge crowds are turning out for him...........and honey, those crowds do not look or sound depressed!

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Turtle-face) looked crestfallen at Pres O's address to Congress last week because he was imagining the hundreds of crowds that Pres O would be able to motivate to get out to the polls and vote for him (again) in 14 months!

14. You can't touch SS and expect Democrats to still support you.

People have been trying to warn those who appear to be in a state of denial about this for a long time. But nearly everyone I know has someone in their family who is on SS, a parent, grandparent, a disabled relative, and they are feeling very threatened by the talk about cutting Medicare and 'fixing' SS, a program that most people know, if they are Democrats, does not need fixing.

People can go on screaming that it's the fault of voters, but so long as Democrats refuse to stand up and say plainly 'hands off Medicare and SS' this will be the result.

I guess they thought a Democrat could persuade the already poor to part with some of the little they have. It isn't working, they need to change course fast.

Who is advising this WH? Is it the Global Capitalists who have done the same thing to Europe? Anyone who thinks you can take from the most vulnerable people while the wealthy continue to profit and refuse to 'share the sacrifice' needs to take a look at what is happening in Europe.

This 'austerity' garbage has to stop. It is a failure, look at Europe where they are doing what is being proposed here. Europe is on the verge of collapse thanks to these policies. I just want to know, where are all the smart people?

Will Obama win easily? I have no idea. But this poll 12 months out means nothing.
