Thoughts on Bachmann and "retardation" vaccinations.

Bachmann said she spoke with a person who said her daughter "suffered from mental retardation" after taking the vaccine.

1.) "Mental retardation" is not only terribly insensitive, its a blanket term and its use in medical circles is severely declining.

2.) Because it is a blanket term, it always has a root cause. "Retardation" could be any number of things including Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy, etc. Most of these categories are genetic and couldn't be caused by a vaccine at all other than brain damage.

3.) Bachmann just uses "mental retardation" and not one of the more technical terms of its root cause.

4.) Bachmann has a well documented history of just flat out making shit up.

12. yeah, she's toast. next nutbag up to be exposed, please!
when we get Perry eventually, that'll leave the toughest nut of them all, Romney. He's honestly their only hope. Perry, in a general, will be exposed as a loud mouthed separatist. His comments about seceding will be great for us.

5. Odd, isn't it?
You'd think someone married to a mental health professional would have a better understanding of the profession's terms of art. Unless . . . hmmmm. You know, something else occurs to me why Ms. Bachmann wouldn't have a better understanding. Very odd.

6. I wouldn't call Marcus a "professional". I don't think exgay therapy is a credible practice. He's

what the profession calls a "quack". lol

7. Perhaps I was over-generous
Which ties into my other thought about why Ms. Bachmann appeared to sound like a blithering idiot.

8. "Retard" is the insensitive slur. "mental retardation" is a perfectly acceptible medical term.

9. Perhaps, perfectly acceptable...
but most refer to it these days as "developmental disability".

11. My son has high-functioning autism.
However, at a younger age, when they tried to IQ test him, they found him to be in the "mentally retarded" range. Had he been tagged with that "label", his future potential could have been overlooked. Instead, he's thriving.

Just my personal take on it. Your mileage may vary. :hi:

14. 135? What a dunce!
I'm Autistic and mine was off scale on the WAIS, thus, at least 145.

:dunce:

13. Actually, self-advocates such as People First use "intellectual disability".

I'm an advocate for my son.
