"It's a hell of a mess," said Dominic Brazda, a bartender at the Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th St.
The Post and Nickel, at the southeast corner of 14th and P, appeared hardest hit. The main broke just outside the clothing store, and water in the basement there was near waist height, said Layne Sup, whose family owns the business.

"We can’t get to our beers … which is kind of pain right now."
Watters said he appreciated the city workers, whose efforts to repair the broken main continued into the late evening. The city also supplied his business with portable toilets after turning off the main, which left much of the block without running water.

A sewer main near Washington and Harward streets burst Monday morning, sending foul odors throughout the neighborhood and giving public works staff what they hope is the last hiccup from the historically troublesome pipeline.
“It ruptured a number of times in the last few years,” Bath Public Works Director Peter Owen said Monday. “This is just another section that has come apart and we just need to repair that.”

The repair contract with St. Laurent and Son is part of a $2 million sewer improvement bond approved in March that will fund six projects, mostly around the Park Street area.

“This will be an additional cost,” Owen said. Damage to the pipe was likely caused by sand accumulating in catch basins. Monday’s breach likely occurred as a result of flowing water pushing the sand through the pipes, which were installed sometime in the 1970s, Owen said.
The new pipe will also be made of ductile iron, but will be cement-lined and more resistant to abrasions, according to Owen.
