Woman's dog shot to death by U.S. marshal

PROVIDENCE --

When a fugitive task force surrounded a triple-decker home in Providence on Wednesday morning, officers were prepared for a suspect to come running out the back door.

But when a pit bull named "Champ" came out instead, a U.S. Marshal opened fire, hitting the dog with three bullets.

The woman let Champ and her other dog, 9-month-old Bayba, out to go to the bathroom, only to hear gunshots a few seconds later.

"He said, 'Ma'am, your dog growled at me. He came running towards me and he growled at me,'" the woman said.

Rhode Island State Police told NBC 10 the fugitive they were looking for had no connection to the dog's owner.
