U.S. seeks to ban electronic cigarettes on airplanes
Current federal law prohibits passengers from smoking any tobacco product on a commercial plane but does not single out the use of electronic cigarettes.

Most electronic cigarettes do not burn tobacco but use a lithium battery to heat up a liquid nicotine solution, creating a vapor that can be inhaled to deliver the chemical directly into the lungs.

"Airline passengers have rights, and this new rule would enhance passenger comfort and reduce any confusion surrounding the use of electronic cigarettes in flight," U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement Wednesday.

I mean I know people who use snuff and chewing tobacco and I can still smell that when I'm around them, even when there's no smoke. When you're breathing out water vapor theres still a cloud that others in the area may have to breathe in.

the e-smoker is ingesting nicotine, not smoking tobacco. If someone breathes near you while chewing nicotine gum you are not going to die.

98. there is no tobacco
An e-cig is nothing more than a nicotine delivery device that creates an odorless water vapor to simulate smoke... the same sort of water vapor that one can see when breathing on a cold day. Do you have a problem breathing in that visible water vapor that people emit when breathing on a cold day? The e-cig has more in common with a nicotine patch than any tobacco product.

39. I used e-cigs heavily, inside, while my house was for sale
a few months ago. Sometimes I'd be using it in one room while the potential buyers were in another (but I was careful not to let them see it!) We had dozens of showings and NO ONE said word one about any smell. Some didn't like the carpet, or the paint colors, or the lack of closet space on the first floor, or other things, but NO ONE complained about how it smelled.

Edited on Fri Sep-16-11 08:24 AM by TheBigotBasher
An electronic cigarette, or e-cigarette, is an electrical device that simulates the act of tobacco smoking by producing an inhaled mist bearing the physical sensation, appearance, and often the flavor and nicotine content of inhaled tobacco smoke; though lacking its odor, and intended to omit its health risks. The device uses heat, or in some cases ultrasonics, to vaporize a propylene glycol- or glycerin-based liquid solution into an aerosol mist, similar to the way a nebulizer or humidifier vaporizes solutions for inhalation.
Most electronic cigarettes are portable, self-contained cylindrical devices the size of a ballpoint pen or magic marker; though sizes vary, mainly due to differing battery capacities. Many electronic cigarettes are designed to resemble actual cigarettes or cigars, or even pipes. Most are also reusable, with replaceable and refillable parts, but some models are disposable.

38. You do understand that vapor is liquid, right?
Liquid is heavier than smoke. Vapor does not waft through a room, floating on the breeze. In order for you to inhale the demon nicotine, I would have to literally blow my vapor into your face.

As for my e-cig "leaking". Um, so the scenario is the dreaded nicotine seeps into your skin because you touched my pocket?

37. "Downwind in a gale" I'll buy, but...
...you realize that even outdoors, twenty feet away in
relatively still air, a person with a fully-functional
sense of smell can often smell the smoke from a single
cigarette. Or if the driver of the car in front of you
at a traffic light is smoking with their window open,
it's often very possible to smell their smoke as you
then drive by.

I don't think smokers (with their diminished senses of
small) have any concept for how much they reek.

44. You're absolutely right about the sense of smell
being sharp enough to detect relatively minute amounts of smoke. That makes it even less understandable that some people fly into a rage when someone is using an e-cig near them. Hello, if there's NO SMOKE, then NO ONE IS SMOKING, even if it looks like they are. I watched an outraged loon give a woman hell for "smoking" in a lobby and when she told him what she was doing he only got MORE pissed off.

To be fair, I personally haven't gotten grief using an e-cig in public, although I've never used it openly on an airplane (I've used it in the lavatory, though, more than once on long flights) or in a crowded restaurant - I don't want to get into situation where I'm facing some furious irrational nutcase in a confined space. I have used it in airports, waiting to board the flights. I got a few glances, but no one seemed to be bothered - I suspect they didn't even know what I was doing, probably because my e-cig doesn't really resemble a cigarette. The vapor dissipates almost instantly and of course, there is NO SMOKE to smell.

...was restricted to the length people will go
to to defend their right to pursue their addictions.

I find the "medical marijuana" posts similarly
amusing: look, if you want to smoke some dope,
that's fine but most of this "I need my medicine!"
rationalization is just that: an attempt to rationalize
the person's desire to smoke some weed. Get the
laws changes to make weed legal, don't hide behind
the "medical marijuana" fig-leaf.

An E cig does NONE OF THAT. It's a miniscule amount of nicotine you inhale and none of the nicotine is in the vapor so it couldn't reach your precious nose. You're being ridiculous just because you hate smoking. This isn't smoking! It's VAPING. So you can put your pretty little mind at ease.

Vegetables have MORE nicotine than any e cig does.

45. Do you feel the same way about alcohol

Of course, on an airplane, you are inhaling low concentrations of alcohol from the evaporation of the drinks and exhalations of those drinking alcoholic beverages.

You are also inhaling low concentrations of chemicals from colognes, hygiene products, and every germ and virus exhaled by everyone else on the plane.

The concern with second hand smoke is that a significant level of carcinogens are produced by the burning end of the cigarette and the exhaled combustion products.

As pointed out, the vapor here consists of relatively heavy glycols with nicotine at a concentration such that it produces the desired dose when directly inhaled from the device.

Nicotine per se is not the component of cigarette smoke that is of concern in relation to the carcinogens involved in second hand smoke.

So, why are you comparing two different things?

Then you should be against them using patches and gum as well.

It LOOKS like smoking, so it MUST be dangerous. Somehow. It just HAS to be. If it's demonstrated that there's no secondhand nicotine in exhaled vapor (of if the fluid being used has zero nicotine content to begin with - this is not uncommon) we'll just make something else up. Because it LOOKS like smoking, so it MUST be dangerous. Somehow. It just HAS to be.

27. "...reduce any confusion srrounding the use..."
This is to pacify the people who throw a temper tantrum because they think someone's smoking around them, and who then choose to remain enraged even after they've found out they were wrong. You'd think people who claim they don't like smoke or are badly affected by it would be relieved to find out that an apparent smoker isn't actually smoking. It should make them HAPPY! So why do they get so pissed off when someone uses an e-cig? It can only be because they hate the smokers (or people who just LOOK like smokers, as e-cig users do) far more than they hate the smoke.

...I don't care. The longest flight I've been on has been 4 hours and I survived. I may have been a bit twitchy, but I didn't go bananas and start beating the guy next to me. Although...there was that one guy that wouldn't stfu that I wanted to suffocate with the baby pillow. If I ever have to fly to Japan (which is likely), we'll have problems. Besides being a smoker, I'm claustrophobic. If I don't get a window seat, someone is going to have a semi-hysterical redhead sitting in their lap.

I would like to know when they'll be banning women who bathe in crappy perfume. I'm allergic to the majority of it and it causes me severe discomfort. Try being on a flight for 4 hours and being unable to breathe, your eyes are watering and itching and your mouth tastes like you've been licking incense. THAT sucks.

I can cite all sorts of examples of my normal behavior that I abstain from when I'm on a plane but I'm short on time.

It looks like a cigarette and even emits what looks like smoke. So resources must be spent to investigate each and every one of these to make sure it's not a conventional cigarette and imagine all the complaints that "so and so is smoking" just because it looks like a conventional cigarette.

I am not anti-smoker per se but I think everyone should quit using tobacco products, that includes cessation aides.

wackos. You're all alike. You have to inflict your beliefs, wants, desires on other people who don't behave/act the way YOU want them to. Vaping doesn't hurt anyone and you people are STILL paranoid about it because in your delicate little minds, you equate it to smoking and it's NOT smoking. It does not have the 4000 other chemicals that cigarettes do. It has no smell. It has no ash. It has no smoke. It has no bad side-effects for other people or those vaping, so what the hell is the problem here? It's water vapor. WATER VAPOR. WATER VAPER will not hurt you and your delicate senses. Seriously. It's just WATER VAPOR.

because people insist on vaping on an airplane or in an airport.

You seem to think that means I'm on the "religious right"- whatever the hell that's supposed to mean.

Nope, they hate it for the most part, it seems. You really have to wonder just why they hate it.

You know, the people who truly care about smokers don't hate it. My husband and my daughters LOVE that I use e-cigs. My doctor is thrilled, and he had me demonstrate it to some of his other smoking patients who've had a very hard time when trying to quit. My friends, whether they smoke or not, think it's great.

Edited on Fri Sep-16-11 03:04 PM by Mariana
Lots of former smokers, after switching to e-cigs, reduce their nicotine level to zero, while continuing to use e-cigs. Liquid with no nicotine whatsoever is readily available from every supplier that I've seen. Why bother, you may ask? Why not just put it down? Because they LIKE to use e-cigs, even without nicotine, that's why. It's enjoyable in its own right.

True, people who are off nicotine aren't going to be jonesing during a flight. Regardless, if you see an e-cig, you shouldn't assume that it contains nicotine, because it may not.

I bought a starter kit in June because it was half price (crappy color) but my house was about to be put up for sale and we were moving to another state. Who the hell stops smoking with all that going on? I was planning try to switch AFTER the move. Well, when it arrived I had to try it to make sure everything worked. Did it ever! I haven't smoked since, and all through the house sale and the move I was just fine. If anything, I was MORE calm than I would have been if I'd been smoking. Now that we're pretty well settled into the new place, I'm beginning to reduce my nicotine level, a little at a time. I may never give up e-cigs, though - I love some of the different flavored liquids.

154. the purpose is whatever a person wants to use them for
They were invented for the express purpose of being able to "smoke" in those places where smoking has recently been banned and probably also to still be able to "smoke" without the harmful crap that's in tobacco cigarettes. It just so happens that because of (depending on which device you use) one can get various levels of nicotine including no nicotine, so it has since been found to be useful to those people that want to quit.

Additionally:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine
Nicotine is a hygroscopic, oily liquid that is miscible with water in its base form. As a nitrogenous base, nicotine forms salts with acids that are usually solid and water soluble. Nicotine easily penetrates the skin. As shown by the physical data, free base nicotine will burn at a temperature below its boiling point, and its vapors will combust at 308 K (35 °C; 95 °F) in air despite a low vapor pressure. Because of this, most of the nicotine is burned when a cigarette is smoked; however, enough is inhaled to cause pharmacological effects.

If most of the nicotine doesn't even get into the lungs of the person that smokes an actual tobacco cigarette, how is it possibly going to effect anyone else when the person exhales???

Furthermore:
(same source)
The carcinogenic properties of nicotine in standalone form, separate from tobacco smoke, have not been evaluated by the IARC, and it has not been assigned to an official carcinogen group. The currently available literature indicates that nicotine, on its own, does not promote the development of cancer in healthy tissue and has no mutagenic properties. However, nicotine and the increased cholinergic activity it causes have been shown to impede apoptosis, which is one of the methods by which the body destroys unwanted cells (programmed cell death). Since apoptosis helps to remove mutated or damaged cells that may eventually become cancerous, the inhibitory actions of nicotine may create a more favourable environment for cancer to develop, though this also remains to be proven.

There it is - nicotine itself is not a carcinogen.

it's not a matter of what you think. the reason against cigarettes has been second hand smoke for many. then people use these e cigarettes which get rid of that pesky second hand smoke issue and then it is something else. i quit smoking when I was pregnant with my oldest. And I am not particularly fond of cigarettes. I was so glad when my husband was finally able to quit. Yet I support people's rights. and I think that e-cigarettes are a good way to allow people to smoke without infringing on others. it's a shame people can't see it that way.

I'm a non-smoker, and I have no problem with e-cigs. Just last night, I was hanging out with a neighbor at his place. He sat there puffing away, and I didn't notice anything (and I have a very, very sensitive sense of smell).

While I could potentially see a problem with someone using them in their seats (when people's faces are like three inches from one another), I'd have no issue with someone taking a few drags in the bathroom or in the back of the plane.

Who's going to save me from a seat neighbor with hellacious gas? That's what I'd like to know.

You would think they would be fucking happy that there is no smell, no smoke. Instead they just create something new to freak out about. Perhaps its that the person did not quit nicotine and what this has been about all along is not secondhand smoke, allergies or smells, but instead the fanatical need to control what others put inside their bodies.

Who won't be happy until every human on the planet is being dictated to about what choices they're allowed to make.

There's also a strong strain of misanthropy present in this attitude. Humans are a messy business, but some people think the public sphere should be sanitized as much as possible for their personal physical and moral comfort.

Babies cry, people smell, moving through crowds is inconvenient. It goes with the experience of leaving the house.

They want to control what you do, what everyone does. Frankly, as a non-smoker (well, of cigs...), I don't give a crap if someone smokes near me, whether from an e-cig or (gasp!) a regular cigarette. Now, I do see why the latter is banned indoors on planes, but the former? No reason at all.

83. Good. I don't generally support e-cig bans, but I support this one.

I usually take a "whatever, it's your life" approach to drugs, but E-Cigs still result in nicotine being exhaled, because your body doesn't absorb 100% of the gasses it inhales. We don't know what the actual absorption rate, so it could be anywhere from 10% to 90% of it being exhaled back out of your body into the surrounding air.

This normally wouldn't be a problem, because the atmosphere quickly dissipates gasses in the volumes we're talking about, but aircraft are a special case. Ventilation is limited, and other passengers are typically only inches away from you. If you exhale nicotine, you WILL be forcing your row mates to inhale some.

In this "wonderful post-9/11 world", where aircraft have mandatory no-movement periods and switching seats is often not an option to get away from obnoxious drunks, smelly people, or plain old fashioned talkative assholes. I don't really want to add nicotine exhalers to the list of people to bitch about. I don't even drink caffeine because I don't like pollutants in my body. Why would I put up with inhaling someone else's nicotine?

An addicts right to their drugs ends the moment they start forcing its use on others.

97. They are off except when actually being used.
A switch turns it on, for a few seconds at a time, to vaporize a bit of fluid to be inhaled. The rest of the time it remains off. That's why they don't emit vaport constantly the same way a lit cigarette emits smoke constantly.

so why not e-cigs? A plane is a very confined space, constantly circulating & re-using air, so this makes sense.

113. This post made my day
As a former "smoker" (or as I prefer to be called, a human being who chose to smoke cigarettes in the past) who successfully quit years ago thanks to e-cigs, this post has me rolling in fits of hysterics. By far and large the bulk of the comments seem very well reasoned, and then there are a few that seem to overlook any sort of reasoning at all.

One thing no one mentions, what about the countless users of e-cigs, like myself, who use ZERO nicotine in their vapes? What's the argument then? How am I hurting someone else with no nicotine at all? And by the way, if you're scared of nicotine, I hope you don't eat tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, etc. In fact, just ban the Nightshade family entirely if your goal is to eradicate nicotine from all 3 dimensions.

I do not even attempt to vape during a flight for a million reasons, but the biggest one being that I know it could cause a panic if someone saw what appeared to be smoke on a plane. So I don't know about more bans and rules, but it's a reasonable request to ask people not to vape during in a flight in my opinion.

As far as the "tobacco stuff" in e-cigs. Ya...ahm, no. There is no "tobacco stuff" in vapes, it's mainly water and nummy tasting flavors you'd find in your FDA approved food. I refrain from using the term "smoking" in reference to e-cigs, because the correct term should be vaping. There is no smoke, no burning, no magical "cancer stuff" floating around from their use. If you're sitting at 30k feet in the air, staring out the window of a plane, there are many other "cancer stuffs" to worry about, like the fact that the TSA just ran you through an XRay to make sure you're not carrying tobacco stuff (this includes cigarettey-looking electronic smokiness stuff) to harm others, or the sun's cancer stuff soaking into your skin with less protection from the atmosphere stuff.

The next time you run across a happy vape user, or as I like to call them, human beings who choose to vape, give them a hardy handshake and say thanks for keeping any semblance of second-hand smoke away from my pretty pink pristine and controlling lungs.

Rant accomplished :)

155. Bravo!!!!
I have been vaping for the past 5 months...giving up a nearly 40 year 2 pack a day habit. I'm still weaning my way down...at 11mg...but a year ago I would have never thought I would have gotten to this point. Zero mg is within sight.

While I will vape like a demon in my office or when there's no one in the car, I find that in public just a couple puffs now and then will kill any crave. Many times I can "cop" a vape and no one is the wiser. I've found almost every non-smoker not only cooperative but curious about what I call my "pacifier". My family is very happy with how things have gone and my accountant thinks the $20 a month on fluids is a far better waste of money than on 3 packs of cigs.

Methinks we're enjoying those who prefer to argue than discuss.

Cheers...

I vaped for a few months before I decided to take the plunge to zero nicotine. From my experience, you can't even tell the difference. When I smoked, I did well over two packs per day and then I started vaping part time. When I quit entirely, I was doing about 11mg a day too, and then I heard stories of others who swore they couldn't tell the difference between nicotine and no nicotine so I gave it a shot.

In my experience the whole "nic fit" idea is a bunch of bullocks :) The horrible addiction to cigarettes is the manipulation of the chemicals by the cigarette manufacturers (mainly freebasing nicotine and making it far more potent than nature made it) that keeps people smoking. Pure nicotine without the manipulation doesn't seem any more addictive to me than caffeine. I guess there are people addicted to tomatoes then?

The thing that was hard for me to overcome was the physical act of smoking, like you call it a pacifier, that's what it is. Having no nicotine didn't bother me any more than not having a cup of coffee for a day. At worst, it was a mild annoyance that barely drew attention.

The control freaks can go insane now that countless thousands of people are quitting and moving to the far healthier alternative. They don't want to see any difference between smoking and vaping, they just want to tell you what to do so they can feel superior :)

Cheers and happy vaping to all :bounce:

211. Excellent! That's how I felt when I tried it.
I tried one right when we were putting our house up for sale and getting ready to move to another state. I wasn't even planning to switch then, I was going to wait until the move was over to seriously give the e-cig a shot. NO ONE quits smoking at a time like that! I liked the e-cig so much I haven't smoked since, not once.

What does your husband think? Mine LOVES that I'm doing this instead of smoking. He's watched me try to quit so many times and he KNOWS how miserable it made me. Now, he sees that I'm not smoking and I'm not miserable - far from it. I may never give up e-cigs, and that's just fine with him.

I don't get these people who are so hostile. Like the one on this thread telling another poster he should smoke because nicotine is an insecticide. Bloody hell, that's some serious hate. Or the one who thinks using an e-cig on a plane is just like boarding with a fake bomb strapped on your body. WTF?

My experience is that most non-smokers have no problem with it, even when they know what it is. If you choose an e-cig that doesn't resemble a cigarette and change up how you hold it a little, most people won't even make the association - it just won't occur to them that you're "smoking" at all. My e-cig is black and looks like a pen. I hold it at the end, which is impossible to do with a lit cigarette. That allows me to cover the LED with my hand, and also further reinforces the impression that I'm holding a pen.

Good luck!

217. Awesome decision!
The ones they sell at convenience stores are usually cheap knock-offs, but it's a good start that you were prompted to try. Especially through all the misinformation in this thread :)

People like different flavors from different stores, hardware from different manufacturers, and there's tons of forums to help you decide what works best for you. I don't usually like to plug any particular store or forum, vaping is a personal decision and we each find out what works best for us. So my advice is Google everything, ask around, find what works for you. Good luck!

Coffee and tea caffeine are more harmful than water vapor from an E cig. Nicotine does NOT cause cancer either. Though there's little to ZERO nicotine in water vapor emitted from an E cig.

152. Man, don't tell our secrets!
Although it's kind of fun to imagine some of the nuttier anti types getting all paranoid whenever they're in public wondering if someone, somewhere near them is vaping, and knowing that most of the time, they can't do shit about it. Imagine what that must be like for them! Smokers are easy to bust, but vapers? They see some woman who looks like she's chewing on a pen - or is it an e-cig? The only way to know is to SEE the vapor during the miniscule amount of time that it's actually visible. Even then, if they complain, most of the time no one's going to give a shit. "You say someone's smoking in here? I don't see any smoke. Wait, what? Vapor? What do you mean, vapor? Secondhand nicotine? You say they might was well be masturbating in here? I see. Do you want me to call someone for you? What was your doctor's number?"

201. A few months ago I was seated across the aisle from a guy
who seemed to be using an inhaler of some sort, round, medicinal looking. Turned out it was an e-cig that did not look like a cig, especially made to quell the interest of those who see the shape and freak out. He said he flew a lot, got e-cig hassles, and this one ended that. Different shape, not one question.
I'm vaping right now and loving it.

It looks more like a pen than anything else, and that's exactly what everyone thinks it is when they see it. I use batteries with a blue LED in public, and cover it with my hand while it glows. I'd like to get a few batteries with no LED at all - I think they're available now for the model I use. No one has ever given me a hassle. I haven't tried to vape openly on a plane, but I have done in airports, waiting in line to board flights, with no problem.
