Bipartisan group of senators calls for deficit panel to 'go big'
By Vicki Needham
September 15, 2011

A bipartisan group of 37 senators said Thursday that they will urge the deficit-reduction committee to cut the deficit by at least $4 trillion over the next 10 years including previously enacted deficit measures.

Led by former Gang of Six members Sens. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.), the lawmakers, nearly equally divided with 19 Republicans, 17 Democrats and one Independent, called for tax reform and an examination of long-term entitlement spending reform.

"Go big, be bold, let’s really address the problem and look at the work that’s already been done," Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said during a Thursday press conference.

The 36 participants include these members of the U.S. Senate:

Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA)
Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH)
Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK)

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC)
Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE)
Sen. Dan Coats (R-IN)
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK)
Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS)
Sen. Kent Conrad (D-ND)
Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE)
Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN)
Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX)
Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID)
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC)
Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX)
Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA)
Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE)
Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI)
Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL)
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN)
Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT)
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO)
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV)
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL)
Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR)
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH)
Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT)
Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO)

(Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill, attended the group's Thursday news conference in support which brings the total to 37 Senators. BBI)

Warner-led Senate group urges deeper deficit cuts

The Virginian-Pilot
September 16, 2011

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, and Saxby Chambliss, a Georgia Republican, are spearheading a new effort by more than a third of the Senate to prod their colleagues on a deficit-cutting supercommittee to make a much larger dent in the deficit as well as changes to entitlement programs and tax laws.

The bipartisan group of 36 senators, organized in recent weeks by Warner and Chambliss, urged the deficit-cutting panel Thursday to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years instead of the planned $1.5 trillion.

The new coalition also wants the 12-member supercommittee to consider changes in the tax codes to generate more revenue, as well as changes to entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

The Senate coalition of 18 Republicans, 17 Democrats and one independent includes all of the Gang of Six except Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill. However, Durbin attended the group's Thursday news conference in support. (With President Obama's blessing I'm sure. BBI)

"We want to say to the supercommittee, if they step forward, we’ve got their backs," said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.

1. These 37 Senators DO realize that they are advocating for cuts of federal aid
to their states, right? Can't support pet projects like they used to. Not in revenge by Obama but simply because there will be less money available.

4. Well, this is sure to become interesting. $4T is serious money. Hard to imagine any area being
spared if this happens.

6. There are three parties in Congress...
...but only two labels.

Democrats-who-are-Democrats
Democrats-who-are-Republicans
Republicans-who-are-Republicans.

The bad news: liberals are the junior partner in a coalition government. The worse news -- the alternative is permanent minority.

9. Even our own party wants to screw us over.
Not one of those people will leave Washington DC POOR. Not one of them will ever have a child who wants for ANYTHING. We need to stop believe these people are like, understand us, want to help us.........Its just shit they say to get elected.
