Bipartisan group of senators calls for deficit panel to 'go big'

A bipartisan group of 37 senators said Thursday that they will urge the deficit-reduction committee to cut the deficit by at least $4 trillion over the next 10 years including previously enacted deficit measures.

Led by former Gang of Six members Sens. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.), the lawmakers, nearly equally divided with 19 Republicans, 17 Democrats and one Independent, called for tax reform and an examination of long-term entitlement spending reform.

"Go big, be bold, let’s really address the problem and look at the work that’s already been done," Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) said during a Thursday press conference.

Warner-led Senate group urges deeper deficit cuts

U.S. Sens. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, and Saxby Chambliss, a Georgia Republican, are spearheading a new effort by more than a third of the Senate to prod their colleagues on a deficit-cutting supercommittee to make a much larger dent in the deficit as well as changes to entitlement programs and tax laws.

The bipartisan group of 36 senators, organized in recent weeks by Warner and Chambliss, urged the deficit-cutting panel Thursday to reduce the deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years instead of the planned $1.5 trillion.

The new coalition also wants the 12-member supercommittee to consider changes in the tax codes to generate more revenue, as well as changes to entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

The Senate coalition of 18 Republicans, 17 Democrats and one independent includes all of the Gang of Six except Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill. However, Durbin attended the group's Thursday news conference in support. (With President Obama's blessing I'm sure. BBI)
