Pennsylvania ponders Electoral College revamp
Democracy may get a whole new look when it comes to presidential politics in 2012. The Electoral College will still bring the next commander in chief to the White House, but tweaks to the system could change the rules of the game.
Other political news of note

After the 2000 election recount drama, polling showed that most Americans wanted to replace the electoral vote system with direct popular election of the president.
But Americans generally don't pay much attention to the mechanics of how they choose the president.

Politicians do pay attention, especially when presidential elections seem to be shaping up as close ones.

1. They can't win legitimately, so they have to finagle different ways to
steal elections. They've installed hackable evoting machines, changed voter requirements, robo called false information, sent out bogus fliers containing false election dates, blocked voters from voting, intimidated voters, thrown out registrations that were printed on the "wrong" gauged paper, gerrymandered districts, and now they have to change the electoral college system to fit their needs.

Fucking Rat Bastards. :grr:

8. It was unrecced because it addresses the increased unlikelihood of Obama's reelection.
The denial here on DU is great.

4. Do the math.

Dems nearly always carry PA in presidential elections. Right now that means 20 EVs for O.

After the repukes have finished gerrymandering PA, they will likely control 12 of the 18 CDs. So it's 12 EVs for the repuke, and 8 for O (the reaming two EVs go to the statewide winner).

That's the same as flipping a medium-sized state like Washington. All without spending a single dollar or stealing a single vote. :scared:

6. Doesn't that mean that Pennsylvania will be making themselves a nearly irrelevant state.
The best anyone will do is win the state by 2-4 Electoral votes. You'd be better off courting the votes of Delaware where you would be guaranteed of three votes.

The major media serving PA will be screwn.

7. But this could backfire if there is a credible independent on the ballot
This kind of system encourages a third choice who could really make a mess of things in the electoral college. If the electoral votes get split three ways, the election could be thrown for the House to decide.

Imagine the outrage that would cause for election reform!
